Is it fine to keep an external HDD plugged into my TV all the time?

It's some sort of LG TV, not a smart TV, but it can play mkv's off of usb.

Would it be safe for the hdd, if I am lazy and leave the hdd in the TV all the time, regardless if I use it or not?

-can the hdd get damaged if it is in use and I turn the TV off?

-I don't know if the TV keeps it spinning all the time, or how often it checks for media on it, or if it sends any weird start/stop signals to it randomly etc.

-I'm not really worried about overheating.

Cheers!

Ive had a cheap seagate hdd plugged into my tv for well over 18 months now. To be honest I wouldnt really worry about it. Having it on is no different than that of any other hdd say sitting idle in a desktop or laptop etc.

Actually, a hard drive inside a tower is being cooled by the case fans, thus preventing mechanical damage due to overheating. I know that there have been some instances where hard drive platters have been warped due to overheating. Try grabbing a 7200 RPM hard drive after it's been sitting in an Nexstar enclosure for a few hours. Try not to drop it. ;) If the drive is a 5400 RPM variant, I wouldn't worry about it that much.

i have one hooked up to my PVR to timeshift/record movies/shows. it seems ok, but i've only had it for a few months. i would be surprised if it caused major issues as it would defeat the purpose.

For my TV I just have a USB flash drive with some music & movie files on it. that's been there for almost a year with no issues, but the TV doesn't record to it or anything. just plays files.

Alright, thanks guys.

If it lasts 18+ months then it's safe enough for its purposes. Just wanted to make sure there weren't any abnormal hidden issues.
