Is i5-4690k Future Proof?
Is there a large difference between default 3,50GHz and MAX Overclocked 3,90GHz ?

I have an Intel i5-4690K and currently it preforms really well on most modern games. I also have the option enabled in the UEFI to automatically Overclocks the CPU when temperatures are acceptably low which lets me achieve around 3.86GHz and with an H80iGT liquid cooler and maximum temperature I've seen with this setup is around 45°C.

Also, before I installed the liquid cooler the CPU rarely went above the default clock speed of 3.50GHz with the stock fan and temperatures often exceeded 70°C under load, the performance hit with this configuration is noticeable and the extra clock definitely helps when I can achieve it.

Wait what? Youre saying the 4690k is at 70° with the stock cooler at under load? I have an normal cooler better than the stock cooler but not smth like a Pure Rock from be quiet!.
So you would not recommnd it with a stock cooler?

Well this information made me NOT buy the i5-4690k.
Staying with the 4460 or 4590
Case closed.

Indeed, the temperature of the 4690k is very bad with the stock cooler

4690k overclocked is extremely future proof, will last a very long time.

I would wonder though if a xeon with hyperthreading is more so though.

I mean people talk about how you don't need more than 4 cores, which is true, but in the future hyperthreading will be used at some point, especially with DX 12.

Nothing is future proof, but the 4690K will suit your needs just fine for years to come if you are asking this question.

"Intel's stock cooler is crap, therefore I won't buy a better CPU."

That's the best logic I've ever heard. /s

Really though, no CPU is future proof. That term is folly. Should you expect better performance? Absolutely. The 4690K will be faster out of the box, and also be able to overclock depending on temps. For example on a Corsair H80i you have a great chance of getting 4.8GHz.

I said the case is closed.

Then I'll flag it for the mods to lock.

When will people learn that there is no such thing as future proof? A 4690k is the best bet for price to life expectancy yes but in 4-5 years I would really consider replacing it anyway.
