Is GPU virtualization without passthrough the future?

However, I’ve yet to locate anything except Hyper-V. [2] Has anything changed on non-AOSP Linux-based OSes since 2017-10? t/108981 doesn’t appear applicable.

The best I can think of is automatically returning control of the GPU via virt-manager to the host when the guest dies, [3] which is sufficient for playing games. However, not when conducting work that one might desire guest and host OS to be available for:
