So I have been having trouble since day one to download windows 8 via the ms windows 8 setup tool. I enter my jey and it says your product key checks out! press next. I press next. We can't connect right now Check your internet connection. I call Microsoft support, multiple times. I have been told i have to buy a replacement disk. But I tell them I want to download it as I dont want to pay like 40 dollars for the disk or however much it is when i can burn it to a dvd. Now they tell me they have to transfer, and I have been transferred atleast 5 times just today. I have called a number of times. The most recent guy told me that I have to buy a new product key. Which will cost me 200, because I will want a disk after this whole fiasco of not being able to download it. I have googled this and many people have it, but I cant find a single fix for it. Besides the key not being valid. Anyways I bought this key, installed it on my computer, and throughout the year apparently reinstalled my computer 37 times (all the same parts, just switched hdd/ssd a few times on windows installs). Just recently did my psu (a year old) went out and destroyed my mobo. I got a new mobo and cpu as the old cpu was dated and the mobo is shot. Now they are saying I cant use it on that computer, as it is invalidated due to all the installs of windows, with the same components every single time. I refuse to pay 200 for a shitty os, I got it when it was 39.99 just before it went up to 200 for pro.
Basically, by replacing the motherboard, you essentially got a new computer, at least that's the way MS defines it. The license per computer, not per person, so that $40 key you got died with the motherboard. I suppose if you hassle MS enough, they might get you a replacement key or something, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Just call again and tell them your old motherboard died so you had to buy a new one ... I've done this coutless times and each time Microsoft has always given me a new key or released the key so it can be used again
I've had a similar experience with Windows 7 Retail. Every time I reinstall it tells me I can't activate my key because its no longer valid. However I am able to use their automated telephone service to activate it just fine. I'm not sure if Windows 8 supports the automated phone activation service but you might consider giving it a try.
Changing your Motherboard, CPU, and I believe GPU will give you problems on an OEM copy of Windows (usualy the sub $99 usd versions) But if you have a Retail version (the sub $200 usd versions) you SHOULD be able to swap them out with no problems.
I'm new to Windows 8 myself I only just got a copy in January but the activation process seams to work the same. I could be wrong.
For DVDs I usually take the disk and make an image on a USB drive then use the USB drive for all my installs keeping the disks as backups. Your allowed to do this and Microsoft has a nifty little USB tool you can use to transfer the image. IF you can get it to work.
If you just need the disk I've had good luck finding replacements on Fleebay cheap enough. Or you might see if someone around here has a spare they arn't using or needing.
I just wanna put this out there.
When your dealing with Microsoft tech support or any tech support for that matter I've usually found that you get more and achieve more when you approach them with a relaxed demeanor. Attitude is most certainly everything in the tech support world and you have to remember the 50 people who called right before you probably cussed them out for hours on end over lessor problems. They might be in the wrong but that minimum wage phone operator might be willing to go the extra mile for you if your nice to them.
I've worked a few tech support jobs in the past and I can tell you first hand that having a nice client is very refreshing from time to time and your more inclined to bend the rules or help someone who isn't irate, That's not to say you wont get that one operator that is just pissed off and hates the entire human race from time to time but as the old saying goes "You get more with sugar"
