Internet Throttling

How can I find out if my isp is throttling? I've been running Neubot and I'm not getting what I pay for. 45bmps and only getting 1-32mbps.

I was looking at the glasgow traffic shaper but it seems to be offline now. Is there any program or method I can do to detect throttling? One thing I notice is.. When ever I use popular speedtests, it's almost like the server detects it because it will hover at first at like 2mbps then jump all the way up to "acceptable" range.

I personally just download Linux iso´s to test my internet speeds.
Linux mint for example provides some nicely fast mirrors at their site.

45Mbp/s = arround 5.5MB/s ish. (8 bits = 1 Byte.)

As @MisteryAngel said, real world tests are better than using speedtest sites. I usually try downloading a game on Steam or anything from a service you know can provide your max rated downlink speed.

Check sites like YouTube and Netflix. If you have the speed for HD and 4K video and you do not get it at that quality, you could be throttled.

also one of your favourite hobby's!

@net200777
Also since when do ISP provide you with what you pay?
Only a few really do.

Typical download speed for steam is only 3-5 Mbps but I might be getting megabytes and megabits mixed up

Download speeds on Steam are shown as MB/s (Megabytes a second) so 3-5MB/s would be between 24-40mbps which is near the top end of max downlink speed, this wouldn't be too bad if you are getting 40mbps more often than the 24mbps but if you are getting 24mbps most of the time, then yes you are being throttled.

Thank you for that clarification. Ya sometimes my speeds are so slow, web pages just sit there and spin. I have Uverse

I also have uverse. Accessing websites is slow, but downloads are fast.

So I would assume that playing video games online using Uverse would also be bad? If web pages load slowly it would likely be a latency problem.

Streaming, loading.. downloading I've seen it all crawl.. I don't play to many online games lately. However I do miss QuakeIII 125fps 1.30 love ya.

I get around 60 to 100 ms ping. So I do not game much.

So we can put this down to Uverse being complete garbage? My latency usually hangs around 25ms and I almost always get my max rated speed, damn ISPs in the US are the worse. I would assume like most places there is not competition and changing provide is not possible/feasible?

You know what's funny? The tech who came out it worked perfect, I'm talking 47mbps. A few hours later.. back down below actually around like 24. Now I find this interesting. http://att.net/speedtiers

Consumer Broadband Service Product Name

FastAccess DSL Xtreme 6.0* 3.1 Mbps - 6 Mbps 512 Kbps - 1 Mbps
Internet 12 6.1 Mbps - 12 Mbps 512 Kbps - 1.5 Mbps
Internet 18 12.1 Mbps - 18 Mbps 768 Kbps - 1.5 Mbps
Internet 24 18.1 Mbps - 24 Mbps 768 Kbps - 3 Mbps
Internet 45M 24.1 Mbps - 45 Mbps 3 Mbps - 6 Mbps
Internet 75M 45.1 Mbps - 75 Mbps 6 Mbps - 8 Mbps
Internet 100** 80 Mbps - 100 Mbps 80 Mbps - 100 Mbps
Internet 300** 150 Mbps - 300 Mbps 150 Mbps - 300 Mbps
Internet 1000** 500 Mbps - 940 Mbps 500 Mbps - 940 Mbps

Technically speaking it does say 24.1 - 45Mbps so if your not getting 45 but its between 24.1 and 45 they could just say "its within the limits of your rated speed".

Also lol @ FastAccess DSL Xtreme 6.0 being 6mbps.

Right, which is not what I signed up for. I find it funny that I pay for 45 and I only get 24 lol............................ ugh. It's GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

My bet is if you pay for 24 you'd be getting 18 instead. Also what is the bullshit with having a range? my ISP says "yo you get 100/5mbps" but I actually get 105/6mbps instead.

That's what we have. But we get more around 13

Install a VPN, if your download speed increases..... then your being throttled. Without my VPN youtube constantly buffers, however, once I start up my VPN all of that stops. I will add that the buffering mainly happens towards the end of the month unless I have been eating up a lot of data that month then it will conversely effect my ISP throttling my download speeds.
