Internet tax in hungary 0.6 USD after every GB data

I do not know if you guys interested or not but I want people around the world aware of this.

My country plans to introduce a new tax you pay after every gigabyte you began to transfer.

The tax payed by the ISP.

Today an unlimited plan is from 4-10 000 HUF (17-41,5 USD) average depending on speed and the area you live.

According to this "draft Law", we are going to pay extra 150HUF (0.62 USD) after every single gigabyte. THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

Origilal Article in Hungarian

Time to grab your torches and pitchforks :D

I hope that nothing similar will come to Czech republic...those idiots in our goverment seems to take the worst examples from other countries.

Revolución!!

So (doing some rough guesstimation) $25 to download Titanfall?

I'll pass, thanks.

That's pretty dumb. Hopefully it doesn't get implemented.

From what google translated i understand, that this would affect mobile internet data only, right?

Has there been any scandals lately? ~0.6 USD per GB is too much and too farfetched to make any sense, hence IMO the only reason why such news would be relevant is to distract the public from something else.

not only mobile data, I would not care...

New article at Reuters (UK) portal

I just sent that link to former chairman of Czech Pirate party (the only party here that have an idea how internet actually works). He thought i was joking at first. I really hope you guys stop that madness in its infancy.

I understand that Orban is trying desperately to fix the budget, but this tax would really mess things up. And im espetially concerned because you r almost my neighbour and these bad ideas have tendency to spread really fast.

EDIT: Does anybody have link to FB group that was created -  as mentioned in the article? Pls post

This is the facebook group :https://www.facebook.com/Ne.legyen.Internetado

And also this is the page for the planned demonstration: https://www.facebook.com/events/553595758107170/

For those who don't wish to read the reuters article there has been some developments, namely the proposed tax will be capped at 700HUF ~2.9USD for private costumers, and at 5000HUF ~20USD for businesses, I'm not entirely convinced that this is the truth since the language they use sounds a bit iffy to me.

I find this idea for internet taxation infuriating since we already pay 27% VAT on our monthly bill and the ISP also have to pay some sort of corporate tax, how much more do they want out of us? More importantly what is going to stop them in the future to raise that cap?

Hi everyone,

Just for the record:

I am a hungarian. I have a BSc in medical laboratory sciences and an MSc in chemistry. I work for a pharmaceutical company as an instrumental (HPLC) analyst, my monthly salary is 130000 HUF (535.5 USD) after taxes which is concidered quite good (most people in Hungary earn around 350 USD). I pay around the half of my income for rent and overheads. So I guess you can see that the 0.6$/GB is unacceptable. Especially in a tax system where: my employer pay taxes after my salary, I pay taxes after my salary, I pay VAT when I buy something (from my already taxed income), I pay taxes because I own something (what I already payed VAT for) and since the bank transaction tax (and now the internet tax) I have to pay taxes even for what I use. I wasn't satisfied before, but now, I really hate this country! Wonder when will the breathing tax come... I know that we have debts but maybe we should cut off the number and the salary (around 8000 USD monthly!!!) of the politicians first before we starve the people to death.

Hope you don't have to experinece this guys.

Best wishes

Well, considering they put additional tax on phone call and got away with it, i think that this is their next step to fill and fix their budget. What i find more dangerous is that its gonna create law that messes with internet where someone could easily add something much more disturbing than a tax later. Ok, i admit its little bit from a tin-foil hat side of view, but those things happen here in Czech republic all the time, i think it could happen Hungary as well.

Unfortunatelly i cant understan a word they say and write on those pages and googles translation does not seem to make much sence, so perhaps you guys can fill us with more up to date info in english.

Omg....please don't let major isp's see this, or they will be charging tax on each Gb's of bandwidth they are already selling you.

Can you azael4msrblonline or someone else from Hungary tell us insights from situation there? This topic is trending in my circles and I would really like to know from you guys who live there and especially from those who r participating demonstrations. Also feel free to post photos.

Thank you
