In the last few days, my internet speed on my PC has gone from around 75Mbps download to 5Mbps. I cannot put my finger on why. I have tried my laptop using the same cable and it is fine on that. I have also tried booting from a live Linux CD and that is just as sluggish.
I guess it must be hardware related, would getting a PCI card fix these problems or could it be something else such as something to do with the Bios? Interestingly the latency is still absolutely normal and fine, it is just the download and upload speeds that seem affected.
Let's eliminate a few potentials here and narrow down the problem.
Look within your modem settings and see what connection speeds it is reporting. This is to check if the problem is external or internal to your network?
Is this only affecting your computer or all others on the network?
How do you connect to your gateway? Wired or wireless?
If wired.
- Have you tried a different cable?
- Have you tried a different port on switch/router?
If wireless
- Have you tried a wired connection?
- Does moving closer to the access point help?
You say it is still sluggish when using a Live CD, so my guess would be towards a hardware issue, connection medium issue or something external to your network.
turn off any network management software. caused the same problem on my 500mbit line
