Internet Slows to a stop when uploading to Youtube

Hey all, so starting a couple days ago, whenever I try to upload a video to Youtube (which I do quite often, about twice a week) my internet speeds immediately slow to a crawl, both upload and download. My advertised speeds are 35Mbps down and a whopping 3 up... I don't think it is my hardware because I've been running my channel for close to a year and it just started 2 days ago with my latest video which is 1080p and 708 MBs, witch is larger than my usual ones.

So when I start the upload my internet slows drastically and I can't really do anything else on the internet or on another device: even speedtest.net fails to load past the "finding best server based on ping" part, then Youtube estimates like 200 mins upload time. Is this just because of the increased file size? Or could it be something else? Thanks.

Who is your ISP?

Reboot modem and test again. reboot means, unplug power for 5 min then re-apply power

Brighthouse Networks

Rebooted both my modem and router at your instructions and the upload is not congesting my network now. Thanks! Any insight as to why that fixed it? I'm very interested in Networking and so I would love to learn more in depth about the cause/solution of what just happened. Thanks again!

The memory/cache fill up over time on cheap modems. That causes slowdowns. Usually you can reboot with less time, but doing it for about 5min allows for the modem to drain the capacitors

Oh alright. I was aware of needing capacitors to drain when rebooting certain things, but not for that specific reason. What exactly do you mean by cheap? My modem is the Motorola Arris Surfboard SB6121. I thought that was one of the higher-end consumer modems.

Id like to have that modem. That modem isn't considered a "cheap" modem even though it can be had for under $100. They all usually require a reboot to clear the memory. I usually recommend once a month to keep speeds up.

Alright, thanks for the advice! Cheers.

If you can limit your upload speed to say 2/3 of the max upload it should help alleviate that. Used to work that way ADSL anyway.

Welcome to DOCSIS, which has very limited upload speeds compared to download. As long as you avoid saturating your upload through some form of queueing or limiting you will improve your downstream performance.

Glad the reboot fixed it. Just a headsup I have BHN also and once you get over ~1 TB they start throttling certain websites. A VPN has solved this issue for me.
