Internet Privacy Tools/Practices

Hey all,

Since many are or should be concerned about their internet privacy I wanted to share this site I came across  through an old post on lifehacker: AdjustYourPrivacy.com. It provides immediate links to privacy settings on major social networking sites as well as a bunch of tools to search for information about you that is online and ways of getting rid of it or burying it. Furthermore, it has browser plug-ins to block tracking and provides alternative search engines.

Having an increased interest in my privacy online since the the video by Tek Syncdicate more or less (I did already do some removing of personal information from these aggregating sites such as Pipl and others), I have been trying out some of these tools offered on the site.

Stuff that I currently use is:

  • AdBlock (Firefox) for most sites, just to improve the browsing experience
  • HTTPS Everywhere (as was recommended in TS's video), although I find it on some occasions to screw up some sites and make them unusable in certain aspects.
  • Collusion (nifty tool to see who is tracking you while browsing by showing a dynamic visualisation of data transferred between sites
  • DoNotTrackMe by Abine. Seems to do alot, over the past few days it has blocked over 2000 tracking attempts and gives information about who is blocked.
  • Also applied to certain opt-outs such as that of th Network Advertising Initiative

I don't really know how effective the ones that I use are (except for Adblock) or which would be better, and pros/cons, etc. The site gives much more options for someone to use as well as alternative search engines which do not track your search behaviour.

I was hoping, however, to start some kind of discussion about these tools to see what would be good to use and maybe regarding practices to inform others within the community (and beyond :))

liveusb sessions and adblock (complete list) seem to the do the trick for me.
