Is there such thing as a website who's top level domain is not controlled by ICANN? What do you guys think about ICANN? Thanks - findwill
I’m also really interested in this, any professional that can explain exactly how all of the domain thing works? One organization controlling all the domains doesn’t seem right to me. Is there any alternative or way to create your own without ICANN, maybe without search engine indexing?
Hi!
This is a Necro, so should really be a quote on a new thread, but you’re new…
Icann just organize a register, with several seperste entities around the world for subsets of the registry.
You don’t need a domain name for a web site, or a web service, you can just use IP addresses.
A list of IP addresses that servers are on, would get tedious and stale, hence the whole DNS system, but you don’t need it
The dark web/the onion network, has no centralized DNS/listing services, and works without it, but links can go stale is all.
And there is no democracy, it was just icann came first, and everyone just followed along.
On the other hand, I wonder if China/similar maintain their own system, with “approved” sites? Part of the firewall perhaps?
Well, there’s the OpenNIC project.
I’ve been thinking about getting involved with it, but never got around to it.
