Interchangeability between Socket M Intel Core2Duo's

Well this may be an very specific question but recently I've been messing around and fixing up my old laptop that has been sitting for a few years now, its running a pretty low end (even for the time) 2006-ish Merom first gen T5500 Core2Duo.

So yeah its pretty crappy. I was wondering if anyone knows if it would be possible to change the CPU to something else higher in the same Core2Duo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_M, such as a T7600.

Normally I would know right away if it was compatible as a desktop part, but having little experience with laptops and their very specific parts I'm not sure.

There is also the question of is it worth upgrading, but in this case the fact that these old CPU's are worth literally nothing, its as easy just to slap one in next time I'm changing the thermal paste.

Thanks for the help.

Yes, you can put a T7600 in but that is as high as you can go due to the 667MHz bus. If you can determine what the maximum bus speed is for your particular laptop you may be able to take another few steps further.

Ah ok, my maximum bus speed is indeed 667MHz for my laptop so the T7600 will have to do I guess.

This is the full specs list of my laptop at the moment (Although I'm running windows 7 and an SSD.) : http://www.lpmanual.com/acer-aspire-5710

You brave soul. Good luck on your upgrade.

Keep in mind that you can now get first-gen Core i based laptops for under $100 and they can have very decent performance for that kind of money. Lenovo's Thinkpad T410 comes to mind.

Yeah very true, I'll probably end up getting one soon as I've been looking for the last week or so (ended up buying an old quad core desktop ._.) but so far Thinkpads have been looking like great bargins.

But yeah I'm mostly just upgrading out of interest and for fun if nothing else. Cant turn down the opportunity of PC upgrades when they are so cheap.

I would read up on my laptop and motherboard upgrade. I used to have a C2D laptop too. So many headaches and also rumors of CPU soldered on motherboard and crap. Also the next gen C2D not compatible with the older gen is bullcrap. I think it was a Dell XPS 15 M1530 with T8300 i believe. I ended up not upgrading the top tier of that gen cuz it was only 200mhz faster or something (T9500). Considering quads on that same gen could be ran on other boards or something really rustled my jimmies.

Never again will I just buy a laptop/pc without seeing if it has any upgrade potential. I eventually both a 1090T for desktop and never looked back lol.
