Intel upgrade from AMD (Looking into Skylake)

Alright well here it goes.

I currently have a system that is doing very well for what I use it for, programming, gaming, minor video editing, and some networking things. But the system is starting to show it's age on some games. I am looking to upgrade my system to the new Skylake CPU's from Intel. My question is, is it worth it to get the i7 6700k or the i5 6600k. I know the i7 wins all the way around but how much of a performance increase in terms of gaming is the i7 over the i5? Is it worth the extra $100+.

I was thinking about going with the LGA1150 socket but I know Skylake is on the new LGA1151 and I'm sure the next 2 generations or so will be on that socket as well. I also know DDR4 is becoming the new standard so I figured that would be the best option (if money isn't anything to worry about). If anyone has any other suggestions about the older processors, like the i7 4670k or i7 5820k I am all ears.

Note: I will be getting a better graphics card in a few months, so I already know that needs an upgrade

Current system specs:
AMD FX-8350 OC to 4.72GHz
16GB HyperX Beast RAM at 2133MHz
AMD 7970 Gigabyte Windforce Edition
Asus M5 A99 Motherboard
Corsair H100i Liquid Cooler
Corsair RM650 PSU
120GB Kingston SSD (OS Drive)
240GB Samsung Evo 840 (Games drive)
1TB Toshiba HDD (General Storage)
Fractal Design Define R4
Corsiar Strafe RGB Keyboard
Corsair M65 RGb Mouse
2: 1080p 21.5in monitors

In terms of gaming the i7 will get you some benefit but not a ton... where you will see the benefit of the i7 over the i5 is in the video editing and other tasks of that intensity. The older hardware might be cheaper now but its really a question of when do you want to upgrade the ram... ddr3 is going out and ddr4 is the new standard. Also the older hardware may lack features you want (do a quick google search comparing the processors to help see where things stack up). As far as if it's worth the extra $100 or not that is up to you to decide.

I'd recommend going with X99 instead of Skylake. The price difference really isn't much and things like video editing will run much better on a 5820k opposed to the 6700k. The difference in ipc between skylake and haswell really isn't anything super noteworthy. I think the i5 is kind of meh upgrade for you. Stock I5 vs your 4.7Ghz 8350 is not going to really be that big a of difference.

The 7970 is still about as good as a gtx 960. And I agree with the above comment, I'd go X99 if you want an i7.

It'd be a decent upgrade unless you were going to hang around for AM4/zen

also the unlocked part isn't going to be worth it

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($329.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H110M-S2HP Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($65.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 4 series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($65.99 @ Newegg)

I was thinking about going that route. Now I don't know to much about Intel, how long do they usually stay on one socket for, because I know AMD has stayed on one socket type for a long time before. Also again with the RAM standard changing, that would be a main reason to go for the Skylake processor.

These are all the parts I really only need when I go to upgrade

not going to be worth it, the 6700 already tops out at 4ghz, most you're going to get out of the unlocked chip is probably going to be 4.5ghz. better off saving the $100+

The X99 Platform will get Broadwell-E and then the socket will be revised. AMD has stayed on AM3+ and Fm2/+ because they don't haven't made something that warrants moving to a new socket yet. X99 also supports DDR4 and actually is a bit more stable with DDR4 then Z170. There is more support in the X99 chipset to make weird DDR4 work whereas that was omitted from Z170.

This is just a personal opinion but I would suggest to wait a few months that Kaby Lake and Zen is out before you do a move.

Yes you will get a nice bump in game with the Skylake but if your FPS is still good in games.
I would not suggest to go with the LGA1150 since the improvement will be minimal for the investment you are about to do.
I would invest in bigger screen first like a 27inches 1440p.
