Intel Core i5 3450 advice

Hello Tek Syndicate! Big time fan of the youtube channel decided to come by and try out the community.

I just recently finished my first real "ground-up" build..

Asrock h77m

G.Skill 8GB DDR3 1600

Galaxy Geforce GTX 660 Ti

I'm also using my old Graphics card, an Asus GT 440, as my dedicated PhysX card..

And I have a standard mechanical 500GB HDD with a 32GB SSD for caching.

Anyway, I feel that I made a costly mistake by not opting for a 3570k for about $30 more, seeing as that one has an unlocked multiplier.

I have never been into overclocking because of what I have heared about wear from increased voltages and need of a third-party heatsink, but I have just discovered that it's way easier now with the multipliers!

Anyway, my question is, would it be worth it to attempt to sell my 3450 on craigslist or ebay in order to turn around and purchase a 3570k?

I'm not too fond of having to purchase a third-party heatsink, but I might have to seeing as that if I do get a 3570k I would want to set the multiplier at least to 42 for a 4.2 GHz configuration.

Would this dramatically increase performance in games and video renderring? My current 3450 is at 3.5 GHz..

PS: With my current setup I'm able to get 50 average FPS in the Mafia 2 benchmark with everything at MAX at 1920x1080. All my other applications work perfectly..

Thanks guys.

sorry to have to do this but.. *bump*

4.2 Is a relitivley low overclock, you could use the stock fan ansd get OK temp with 4.2. However I wouldn't go much past it with a stock heatsink.

I would do the upgrade, It wouldn't do much for ingame preformance maybe ~5 fps, However video rendering it should do a decent bit. Another CPU you could go for is the 2500k but thats more for gaming rather than rendering.

It's pretty obvious that you would see gains, i'm not sure how far you can take a 3450 if you can at all, but you can clock 3570k insanely high, most OC's i see hit the 4.5 mark ezpz. I dont think you're hitting a bottleneck and i think you could handle spu heavy games but an OC would do wonders. Like for me overclocking my 930 to 4.0ghz suddenly gave me a constant 60 in planetside2.

@michlantecuh

I wanted to stick with Ivy Bridge because it's "the lastest and greatest" sort of speak, and apparently I need it for my mobo to unlock the full potential of PCIx 3, which is redundant seeing as how my 660ti doesn't even take advantage of the full badwith but w/e. After some tinkering around in my system I was finally able to have my CPU run at 30C on basic browsing and never go above 45C in games. So the stock heatsink works preety well and I have it running at Level 7 fan speed so it's preety quiet as well.

@Oxy The multiplier wont go north of 35, that is the "Turbo-Boost" that is advertised.

Seeing as how I do a lot more gaming than video renderring, and my other applications, such as Reason or Cubase, are not straining my CPU (I used to use a $60 AMD dual core with no problems), I'm going to stick with my 3450, the temperatures are great now and the performance is excellent.

Thanks guys.

I'm 90% sure h77 motherboards can't do much overclock so no need to do so. Any overclocking you can achieve on 3570k on this mobo you can acheive with a 3450
