Integrated mic on headphones usage on PC

Hey guys you know how some headphones have an integrated mic on them for iphones and such.

Does anyone know how to use these on a pc? There's no real clear answer from Google.

Not sure this can be done unless you have a integrated 4 pole socket on the sound card.......and think you only see them on laptops. 

Only way round this for a desktop would be a 4pole to 2x 3pole splitter (this will give you a headphone and a mic jack from your single 4 pole headphone jack)

Would the computer be able to distinguish the inputs though?

Using a splitter, yes.
