Installing Windows 8

So I am updating to Windows 8 but I am in a pickle my computer doesn't 
have a disc drive and I am installing from a disc I have an external disc drive
would that work?

You have 2 main options:

  1. Get an external disc drive, or
  2. Install from USB (requires another computer, perhaps someone else's, and a USB stick large enough for a windows .iso file)
