I got a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro for free, and installed Linux on it. I want to give it to my brother, but he wants Windows on it. I am trying to boot to the flash drive, but when I hold down Alt while powering it on it does not show anything to boot from. Just a cursor.
Any ideas?
You need to use Boot Camp.
And read this
That's for Win 8.1
or this
straight from Apple's website.
You can burn a DVD, insert it and hold "c" while booting I believe. Alt should also work.
I have Antergos on my mid 2009 MacBook pro dual booted with OS X. Runs pretty well once you use some code to set and monitor the fan control.
I think you can press and hold 'c' and it will boot to whatever you want. Bootcamp is the best method for Windows. Linux I don't think is as picky.
the following thread may also be useful. I can send you my script that sets the fan control if you go with Arch or an Arch derivative like Manjaro or Antergos.

This would be a great time to have "the talk" with your brother about why Windows is bad, m'kay.
Just ignore me otherwise, I'm not actually providing anything to further the conversation cuz I don't actually mac so idksorrylol
