In need of help and Suggestions. (noob here)

I have taken an interest in building my own pc and I have been doing a nice amount of research to learn about parts and stuff.  My main uses for the computer would be to browse the web, watch hd streams/youtube videos, and basic school work with microsoft office (Word/Powerpoint). I also would like try out pc gaming. I would like the pc to be able to run games on some pretty nice settings and frame rates.  I would like the pc to have some room to be upgraded in the future as well if possible.  My budget is around $600.

Things to keep in mind:

  • I don't do any video/picture editing.
  • I don't stream anything.
  • I am completely open to just getting the main pc parts for my system to run and then buying a graphics card later down the road.
  • I would like up-to-date pc parts.

Also, could you guys put together some builds with pc part picker so that i can see some examples of what i can make with my budget?  Thanks in advance.

Do you have anything now like a OS, Monitor, Keyboard? Or do you need the whole works?

Pretty much need the whole works but i was mainly just focused on getting the main internal parts to make the system work.  For monitor i could prob hook it up to my hd tv for the time being, and was gonna get some cheap mouse and keyboard til i figure out what i really want  I guess you could add the os since its an important part.

Ok, I'll throw up something that'll suite your needs

What type of games would you be interested in playing?

Well i have bf3 and far cry 3 on console but i wouldnt mind trying them on pc as well.  I cant think of any other games on pc cause im not too familiar with what games are on pc.  I tell you one thing though  im not interested in crysis 3.

Ok, so this is what I came up with, http://pcpartpicker.com/p/DNHz , you should be fine hooking this up to your tv, and the graphics card, is obviously bad, but it should work until you upgrade, the CPU will be good for gaming for a while, and I also put it a 600 watt too, so you'll be fine with that when you upgrade. And if you would just use the optical drive to boot Windows 7(Or if you prefer 8, just add that), you could remove that off the list and just boot windows via USB Flash Drive, which will save you like 18 bucks. And the case if you want to change it is up to you.

Thanks for taking the time to do this. Woudlnt be better to just leave that graphics card out and put into something else such as a after market cooler?  Which is better windows 7 or 8?  Im using a mac right now so i havent kept up with the changes to windows.

If you plan to overclock your Processor, then an after market cooler is necessary, if not, the stock one is fine, Windows 8 from what I have heard perfoms a bit better, but a lot of people don't like the look of it. So if you want to overclock, I'll add in a 3570k instead of the 3350p, and an aftermarket cooler as well

im not really sure what the benefits of overclocking is, could you explain?  I will say though that microcenter has the core i 5 3570k at a price of 189.

There's really is only one differance between Win7/8 atm, and that's Drivers..Right now Win8 has hardly any ddrivers released, so many parts aren't going to run too well, but no doubt drivers will be released soon enough..Win7, slightly longer boot times, yes, but you don't have to deal with Metro andd you have all the drivers and service packs.

Win8 is not worth it untill SP1 is out andd all the drivers for your chosen parts are released, I would stick with 7, but really, the choice is down to what you prefer.

Excuse all double 'd's..My D key is half broke and it annoys me having to backspace the extra 'd' out of everythingm sometimes I get an extra 'd', sometimes I ddon't.

Thanks

Should we not be considering AMD aswell?..I mean an FX-6300 keeps up pretty well with the i5 for the cost, andd if he is OC'ing, then a 6300 would be cheaper with similar performance.

My build for you went over by about $50 but it is to get you some pretty good parts. You can down grade on the hard drive and the video card if you want. I reccomend keeping everything else for the best bang for your buck.

Yes it is $189 at MicroCenter for pickup, so if there is one by you, pick one up for sure. And overclocking, is making the speeds of your CPU faster, so it will run faster, but it will make the CPU run hotter, which is why an aftermarket cooler would be advised. (And if you want to overclock here's a redone build for it http://pcpartpicker.com/p/DO2Z)

There is actually a microcenter 10 mins from my house so most of the parts will come from there unless i find a better deal online.  Also what are some of the better graphics cards to maybe consider? They have to be the tippy top of the line cause im pretty sure the midranged cards will look a lot better than anything on console?  Also steve does that motherboard allow for room to upgrade in the future?

Just throwing an AMD option in seen as there have only been Intel ones so far: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/DO9n

The 6300 can keep up pretty well with the i5, not faster, but almost as fast. And seen as you'll be OC'ing, it's going to keep up well with an i5, and the extra cores could really help in some processes.

It depends what you want to upgrade on it, if you want to add a better CPU, yes , if you want to add another GPU for SLI/Crossfire at some point in time, yes, and a midrange card I would recommend when you upgrade would be a 7850 (Around $175~ish), or a 7870 (Around 215-250).

i dont have any plans to overclock since im still new to all this stuff. im pretty sure the default clock speed will be good enough for my needs but i guess having the option isnt bad either.

Well, you could just keep the stock cooler now, and just buy an aftermarket cooler later and overclock
