Hey there. Just a wanted to ask you guys a question. What is, in your minds the best way to get into the games industry? Modding, a higher education, or something else?
And secondly, on the same topic. Do you think it is a good idea to make a mod as a kind of resumé project in Skyrim? Or do you think that it's too late to attempt any kinds of bigger Skyrim projects right now since Fallout 4 will be out before the project gets done?
Modding is a pretty good way to learn how to mess around with things, but being able to make your own game would be even better. People like Dean Hall did just that, worked on DayZ and ended up creaiting his own game company.
If you are going to do a resume project, it has to be something note worthy. A poorly executed project won't get you anywhere. Higher education would also help, since that is just something people seem to expect now. The education will get you the interview, and the project will get you the job, probably.
Depends what you're trying to get into. If you want to work as an asset artist or something similar, then yeah. Mods are a great way to build a resume. If you are wanting to get into full on game design and what not, then with the availability of cheap entry game engines, building your own game makes more sense. You can go to school for it if you like. It might make it easier to get noticed by the big boys if you have a degree to your name. If you want to work for a smaller or indie dev, then building your own game would be a perfectly acceptable way to go about it.
