I7 3770k build questions

Hey Tek Syndicate forum members!

Im moving from console to pc, and i have a few questions;

Obsidian 450d or 350d (atx vs m-atx)

Will my dark rock 3 fit in a 350D?

can i overclock efficiently with this cooling?

and can i fit regular vengeance ram under the cpu cooler, instead of LP versions.

and can i fit a soundcard and my graphics card on this mobo?

If you have any modifications you think i should get, please comment.

The General Colour Scheme is matte black and blue.

Build Specs:

Case: Corsair Obsidian 350D

Processor: Intel Core I7 3770k Haswell

MOBO: GA Z87 D3H LGA 1150 Micro ATX

Ram: Corsair Vengeance LP 8gb

GPU:  EVGA GTX 760 Superclocked ACX

PSU:  Corsair CX650M

HDD: WD Blue

Software: Windows 7 pro 64 bit

CPU Cooler: Be Quiet: Dark Rock 3

Thermal Paste: Arctic Silver 5

Ill also be outfitting it with 2 AF140 fans, and 2 SP120 fans (1 SP for the back, and one on the Dark Rock)

I'll also be getting a standard ASUS Optical Drive

FYI, I dont have ethernet in my house so i will be getting this wireless adapter so i can use my desktop with wireless internet.

Thanks A lot for helping guys! I look forward to moving over to PC :)

Alright well first let me say welcome to the PC community. You'll like it here.

Let me just clarify some things that you may be confused about as you're new.

The 3770k isn't a Haswell part it is the last generation IvyBridge part. That is important as they perform differently, however minor that is, and use a different socket (Haswell is LGA 1150 and IvyBridge is LGA 1155) and require different motherboards and chipsets.

What are you going to be doing with this rig? Just gaming? If that is the case then you do not need a 4770/3770 i7. The 4670k i5 will do just as good of a job. The Xeon 1230V3 is also a good choice. It is an i7-4770 without an iGPU and much cheaper. It can't be OCed though.

Also be sure to check out the AMD 8350/8320. They are cheaper than the i7s and i5s and are nearly as fast as the i7 and can be OCed. They also are great for rendering too. However they suffer in poorly optimized titles like DayZ/ARMA engine games.

I'm going to recommend what I'd do.

Case: Fractal Design Define R4. I like this case better. It is a little cheaper and very quiet while still maintaining good airflow.

CPU: i7-4770k if you want the best for gaming and video editing/productivity and want to OC. i5-4670k for gaming and OCing. Xeon 1230V3 for gaming and editing but no OCing. AMD FX-8350 for gaming, editing and OCing. Cheapest.

Mobo: Intel OCing- Asus Z97-A. Intel no OCing: any decent B or H 87/85 board will work well. The ASRock B85 Fatality Killer is a good board. AMD: Asus M5A99FX Pro/EVO.

RAM: 8GB of whatever is cheapest. The Corsair RAM is incredibly overpriced and doesn't give you any performance benefit.

GPU: That is a good choice as are the ASUS 760s. Look at the R9 270s as well. Tiny bit slower but are much cheaper. You can also find incredibly good deals on the Radeon 7950s which will stomp both of those cards.

PSU: The CX series is decent but there are better options out there. I'm a fan of the RM series.

HDD: The Blue is a great drive but you may want to get an SSD as well. The Samsung 840 Evo is an incredibly good drive and it will really help performance, especially boot times.

OS: I'd go with Windows 8.1. It is more secure, newer and faster. With StarIsBack it is almost like Windows 7.

CPU Cooler: I'd go with the Noctua NH-U14S. Is is very quiet and is as good as a closed loop water cooler.

You really don't need more fans. The case comes with them and they are sufficient.

You don't need an optical drive.

Get an internal PCIE wifi card. They are better and don't take up desk space. The Intel b/g/n/ac one is excellent and is around $40.

A sound card would fit but you don't need one. They don't do much and the audio on the motherboards is very good.

Thanks For Replying,

For the CPU i might stick with the 4770k I7, because ill be gaming, doing music production, and a bit of productivity.

The R4 and Z-97 also look and sound awesome, so ill go with those.

i might get windows 8.1 pro as well

I checked out the RM series, ill il probably use that one in the 650w flavour.

Internal PCI/e wireless card sounds great

I'll probably stick with the dark rock, as it fits will with the black colour scheme.

ill consider an ssd, and ill check some other ram prices.

and another question, what do you think i should overclock the 4770k to?

OC it as high as you can with your cooling solution you have.

Just remember, OCing isn't the same for everyone and it is down to the particular CPU you have. Haswell parts are temperamental and don't OC as well, usually, as the older parts. You may be able to hit 4.5 you may only get to 4.2.

*update*

A lot of ram prices are similar, so do you have any personal recommendations that would fit under the dark rock?

Low profile stuff.

Kingston HyperX Fury, HyperX Black(I have these sticks - work great), HyperX Blue/Red should be low profile.

Crucial Ballistix Sport should also be low profile.

G.Skill Sniper Series, Ares, and other G.Skill ones should be low profile as well.

i've been checking out the MSI Z97s SLI Plus motherboard, because it sounds good, and it matches my black and blue colour scheme.  the Asus z97-a is another good option, but the bronze/gold heatsinks will look horrible...

nm ill go with the z97-a, itll atcually look good

Asrock Z97 Extreme 6 has loads of features and will match that color scheme. I would highly recommend ANY SSD if your going to well do anything it will speed up every application from games to general productivity. Lastly, the gtx 760 over the R9 270 for sure not had to much experience with that 7950 though so can't say there. I have noticed that my Nvidia cards run better with my intel chips and the vise versa is also true.

Any SSD that doesn't use asynchronous flash, that is.  Stay away from Kingston's V300.  Kingston's new HyperX Fury line of SSDs is good, though.

The 7950 is about on par with the GTX 760.  I have had a HD 7850 1GB and now a 3GB HD 7950.

Thanks guys, but the ASrock mobo, is about too expensive.  Do you think an MSI Z97s SLI Plus, is another good mobo?

so, my original colour scheme was black and blue, because i was getting an arsenal of corsair fans, but i decided to invest that money into a GTX 770.

is it worth it?

Might as well preorder the 4790k with that build. It's the same price as 4770k but much much better. Especially if you want to OC in the future. :D

Lol, i would, but im in Canada, so i cant pre-order it for a while :P

Yes.

The fans that come with the case should be good enough.  A GTX 770 is indeed more powerful than a 760.
