i5-4690k overclocking questions

So I'm overclocking my i5-4690k, I can get 1.2v @ 4.5ghz stable with Intel burn test with temps not exceeding 85c. But when I run prime95, I'm unstable until I set my voltage to 1.216v, problem with Prime96 is my temps go straight to 65 when I start then slowly creep up, until they hit 80, then they stay there for a good 5minute, then it spikes to 90-100c and my CPU throttle and the system crashes.

My question is, should I be worried about this?  Should I drop my freq to 4.4ghz? or maybe set 2 cores to 4.5, then the other 2 to something lower? I'm currently using an Enermax ETS-T40B with arctic silver thermal paste.

Thanks.

Don't use prime95 it adds extra voltage to your CPU.

Use AIDA64 to stress test CPU

EDIT:

Stock voltage is 1.252.

what about intel burn test? its normally my goto overclocking software since it tends to show me the max temps I'll get without a long session

I have never used it before but its worth a shot. I doubt that Intel would release a program that would potentially danger their own product.

ok AIDA is allot better for stability, thanks. I think 1.216v @4.5ghz on all cores is stable, max temps are 70c so far, I expect them to creep to 80~

I have the i5 4690k, i can run 4.7 GHz @ 1.3 volts. I do not see temps above 75 C with my cooling setup, however I only clock this high when I want to render something. For gaming I run it at 4.5 GHz at 1.2 volts and temps are maximum 55 C. Just got done playing 5 hours of Tomb Raider, never saw it go past 45 C actually. Currently I'm clocked at 4.4 GHz because I'm running F@H (Folding at Home), and when I'm clocked at 4.5 temps get up to 65 C, but when I'm at 4.4 they don't go past 55. This is a wonder to me, I guess because the voltage at 4.4 I run with is 1.175 volts.

For stress tests, just like my colleague Theonewhoisdrunk, I recommend Aida 64. But you can use the F@H as a stress test, it really only consumes about 90% CPU load, when you set it to max computation settings. Its a great way to test out the CPU conservatively(and you will help science to boot!), because with this processor, i5 4690k, Even in the most intense games, we won't really see the CPU load go over 80% really. This evidence is based on my experience with games like, heavily moded Skyrim, Titanfall, DragonAge Inquisition, Shadow or Mordor, Tomb Raider, Far Cry series, and BioShock series.

But for the truely daring, there is this program called LinX, its basically like the intel burn test. So if you want to give this synthetic a try go ahead. I think its the torture test youre looking for. That or OCCT.

You could try to lower the vccin a bit, with most devil canyon chips  you  now are able to lower the vcore a bit.

thanks for the input people.

My OC is 100% stable according to aida64 at 4.5ghz with 1.216 on the vcore, my max temps are about 75 with aida, with mostly hovering around 65. I could try for 4.6ghz but I don't feel like running 1.3v with air cooling.

use this guide to overclock your 4690k

it gives you correct vcore for frequency that you want to get

Overclock is dependant on silicon lottery. They are estimations of around what you should set it to. You have to fiddle with it to get it perfect.
