I am thinking of upgrading, but I can't decide if I should be upgrading my GPU or CPU.
Right now I am not even getting 60 FPS playing Fallout 3 on max settings using a GTX 670 at 1080p, in my mind that means I need to scrap this 6100.
I have $400 to upgrade, what should I do?
I used to use a FX6100 a long time ago and i was very disappointed with its gameing performance my cpu before that was a amd phenom ii x4 965 and that actually had better performance.
Fallout 3 relies on single threaded performance something the 6100 isent good at have you tryed overclocking the cpu yet?
I would wait a bit and get a midrange skylake i5 (roughly the equivalent of the 4460) and a motherboard that supports DDR3.
Although GTX670 is a bit dated now, right?
A GTX670 is still a good card for 1080p especially if you are only playing fallout hell i still run a HD 7950 and fallout only use's 20-30% of the card to run it.
Fallout 3 is a odd old game, kinda picky when it comes to CPU stuff.
I'd try to get some Phenom 2 6 core for cheap and overclock it, or one of the new 6 core am3+ CPUs.
Even my old core 2 quad gets a better score than that cpu.
Yeah, I have it running at 4 Ghz at all times, no boost non-sense.
So, guys, anyone have exerience with the 4460? Maybe a recomendation for a good, cheap gaming CPU.
Well there are options you can grab a FX8350 and overclock it or go for the i5.
I just got rid of my FX8320 for a i5 4690 (none k) and all my games run better and the chip is sooo much cooler i dont have to sit in my underwear because my 8 core isent heating the enitire room lol.
A i5 4460 is a real good gameing cpu right now per it up with a H97 motherboard sell that old gear off and start saveing for a nice video card for the future.
I was gonna pair it with a Z97 board, so I have a bit more wiggle room next time I need to upgrade.
Either way, thanks for the help!
Edit: Here is what the build will look like once I get around to purchasing it all, stuff that I have right now is marked as so.
The mobo is a tad over kill for that cpu tbh anless you plan on useing SLI at a later date i'd get something a little cheaper i got a Gigabyte Z97P-D3 for cheap (only £58) for my i5 (it was cheaper than the H97) it only has CF support thats why its fairly cheap
I wasn't able to find that motherboard, maybe it isn't for sale in the US, either way, I was going to grab this mobo so I can get a better CPU in the future. Right now I am super exicted to grab an SSD, I want to find out if all these people praising them like a gift from heaven are true or it's more placebo than real improvment.
You will wonder why you never had one after useing one windblows boots near instant (even on old vershons like windblows 7) programs and apps load up instantly and games have no load times.
A samsung 850 pro will be the best to get or a crucial bx100 for a more budget oriented ssd while still being fast and reliable (250gb+ variants)
Currently using Windblows 7, when I get the SSD, I will be dual booting win7 and 10. I imagine playing the older Fallout games will be even harder to play on 10 than 7.
Looking at the fallout forums on steam as i still love to play fallout 3/NV a lot are haveing problems running fallout on W10 hell fallout 3 dosent even like W7 lol.
You will definitely be wanting a 250gb+ with 2 operating systems on it.
HERE is a article on how to optimize your SSD for windows
Do you think so? I am just gonna have the OS', CS:GO, Photoshop, Firefox, Steam and Skype on the SSD. I am gonna keep all my games and media on my hard drives.
w7 is 25gbs of drive space (not shure how much NSA 10 takes up as i will never use it) then you have page file (8gbs if you have 8gbs of ram) hibernation 4gbs + windows back up can be large and thats just for windows 7.
If you are not going to put games on it a 128gb will be allmost full with 2 operating systems on it.
250Gb drives are realy cheap lately it makes more sense to grab a 250gb and then you can run one of your favorite games from it too.
I don't plan on putting a whole lot of games on it anyway, so I think I should be fine. If I can fit it, I wouldn't mind having CS GO installed on it, but it isn't a big deal if I can't, I am usually the first one in even with a 7200 RPM HDD anyway.
like most of Bethesda games, they are cpu bound!
Plan on overclocking at all? If not, got with an H97 motherboard and i5 4460 cpu. That's what I have an 0 complaints so far.
i am sorry, but i did not see anywhere the question, what is your motherboard? If it is supporting 8350 you should go for it. The performance improvement will be massive, and you will change only your CPU. Now if you have to buy both motherboard and cpu, the i agree, that 4460 is a better choice.
