I5-3750 Ivy Bridge vs FX-6300 Vishera

Thoughts?  I have builds ready for either processor... the Intel build is only $60 more due to a slightly cheaper MoBo.  I want to see some reviews come out for the FX-6300 first, but right now I'm leaning towards ponying up the extra $60 for an Ivy Bridge rig.  All the new AMD 8 cores seem to shadow the 6300, I fear it will be a while before I see any half descent reviews come out for the 6300 Vishera. I just feel a little shy to leave AMD, my last 3 computers were all AMD.  The last Intel I had was a Pentium III haha.

get the 8320 or 8350

Yeah, but then I would need to add $80 for the cpu, possibly upgrade my motherboard too.  I feel like value wise the i5 or the 6300 run laps around the new AMD 8 cores, but maybe that's just me.  Plus, how much more would I be squeezing out of an 8350 over a 6300.  I don't feel like it is cost efficient. I feel like the i5 could run laps around the 8320 or 8350 when it comes to how much you're getting for your money.  I'd rather get a nice cooling system and overclock the i5 or 6300 a little more.

Well, the 8350 is a bit faster for creative stuff, rendering, and productivity... but only a few fps faster when it comes to gaming. However, the Intel is faster all the way around (except for some rendering jobs and such). It's not much faster (5-10fps in some games)... but it is uaually faster. I have been recommending the 6300 and 4300 for budget systems, but I would go 3570k if extra money was in hand.

Thanks, that is what I figured about the 8 cores.  I'd rather have the 5-10fps in gaming, as I don't have much creativity.   Would ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 motherboard be good for the 3750k?

I think anantech did a good job with their review of all of the new Piledriver chips.

With the exception of their love of sysmark which I've never shared, I think they did a very balanced set of tests on all these chips and compared them to their Intel brothers so you can draw conclusions based on what your work load is.

Don't see why I couldn't find that on google.  Still looks like the Intel would fit my needs better.  Thanks a bunch though, just confirmed my decision.

As long as you don't end up cutting away at other important components to save enough money for the i5 then its a reasonable thing to do.

Here is the build I'm planning on doing.... not too sure about the Motherboard.  I'm not too sure about the Motherboard, but everything else looks top notch IMHO.  Then again, I'm quite the noob when it comes to this stuff

ASRock Z77 Extreme4 Motherboard

Intel i5 3570k Ivy Bridge CPU

Corsair Hydro Series H60 Liquid CPU Cooler

Cougar CF-V12H Vortex Hydro-Dynamic-Bearing Silent Cooling Fan

8GB Mushkin Enhanced Redline

HIS IceQ Turbo Radeon HD 7870

128GB Samsung SSD

500GB WD Green Caviar HDD

Corsair Enthusiast Series TX650M 650 Watt PSU

All in an Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower

After further speculation on the MoBo... I decided on the Asus P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 instead.  Looks higher quality all-around.

First of all... NO GREEN DRIVES! Man how many times does that need to be said on this forum before it becomes law, drop a few extra $ and get a blue. Green drives are terrible at everything.

Interestingly, I find the HD 7870 to be the tipping point for me. Anything below an HD 7870 you should go with the FX6300, anything above it you should go with the i5. The HD 7870 is the grey zone for me, if the person is in the upper limits of their bugdet then they should go for the FX6300, if they are in the lower limits of their budget then the i5s are the way to go.

y u no like green drives? I'm just using it for music and some less intensive storage.

if you don't want the 3570K there are 2 other i5s that can be comboed with it

they are terrible all the way around, high failure rates and slow, not really that much cheaper either

Well, if you had the choise between AMD FX-6300, AMD FX-4300 and AMD Phenom II X4 965 which one would you take for gaming? Price is of no importance.

Also, is the FX-6300 consuming less or more power than the 965? Ratings like 125W & 95W don´t say much about actual power consumption. I´ve already done some research on this but in some reviews the FX-6300 somehow consumed more power than the 965 although rated @ 95W compared to 125W 965.

Also, which air cooler would you recommend if I choose to run any of those CPUs at their base frequency.

I´ve read that the Scythe Yasya or whatever it´s called achieves very good cooling results even on a power hog such as the Phenom II X4 965.

So you´re saying that an FX-6300 would bottleneck an HD 7870? I´ve got an HD 7770. So this one shouldn´t be bottlenecked by the CPUs I´ve mentioned above?

Alrighty, I'll switch it back to blue... should've went with my gut instinct.

In 90% of games, no the FX-6300 shouldn't bottleneck an HD7870, but going any higher than the HD7870 and that number will start to grow. One game that comes to mind that might bottleneck it is SCII, though I'm not really sure about that, and if it did, you could turn down one of the CPU intensive settings down one notch, like the physics, since they are there sheerly for decoration.
