Pretty much the only game I play right now is World of Warcraft. The reason I've been wondering about upgrading is that in a few weeks I will be purchasing a Dell U2913WM 2560x1080 monitor. I have played WoW with 3x1920x1200 24" HP ZR24w monitors (still have them, just quit playing like that, it's TOO much screen real estate for WoW) and the problem is that the framerate drops to 20-25 FPS in 25 man raids, and I'm on a high pop server so cities are 17 FPS at times on Ultra. I really think my CPU is bottle necking at that point, or could it be WoW just sucks at that resolution? Everything I have is working perfectly fine right now, so if I don't have to upgrade, I really don't want to other than the "upgrade-itis" I've got.
The 4770K is the same as the 4670K except it has hyper-threading, which is good for rendering. The 4770K/4670K is nearly identical in benchmarks to the 3570K in gaming. It doesn't really matter though, the CPU definitely isn't bottlenecking it. At 3x1920x1200 you're pushing 6,912,000 pixels per frame. With 2560x1080 you're pushing 2,764,800 pixels per frame. It's definitely your GPU that's bottlenecking.
The short answer is no, the long answer is maybe...if you're willing to spend the money for meager gains in performance which probably won't be in games. I upgraded from my 2500k to a 4670k, but even that is a bit of a stretch in terms of a performance upgrade.
If you want a meaningful upgrade, you could Crossfire your 7970 with a 280X, however with AMD prices as they are right now, definitely don't attempt it now.
Thanks for all of the replies, looks like I'll just be getting a new case, water cooling loop, and a 29" ultrawide monitor. :) With the money I saved, I should be able to get a new desk too.
