Hi,
i'm new here, so sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, or has already been answered somewhere.
(btw. is there a search something? am i blind? :S )
i've heard logan say something like "i-series cpus are basically xeons".
well this caught my ear, and i'm trying to understand or figure this out.
So i was looking at benchmarks. the intel xeon E3-1240 v2 has around 9000, and the i5 3570 has around 7000. they're both 1155 sockets. i5 is listed under desktop cpu, and the xeon is listed under server cpu, when i want to buy them.
My understanding is that the i5 is a xeon with an internal graphics chip. is this correct? So when i'm building a gaming pc, where i won't use the i5 graphics, because of the dedicated graphics card, wouldn't it be reasonable to buy a xeon instead of the i5, and maybe get more performance for the same money?
those 2 cpu's are randomly chosen btw. i don't know the price for either, and i didn't try to find and equivalent xeon for the i5 without graphics for the same price with better performance.
So my question is more or less:
Can i just buy the "server"-cpu instead of the "desktop"-cpu, and use them with the same motherboard? and maybe get better performance for the same money (because not needed internal graphics)?
Or where did i make a mistake?
If iX are xeons, whats the difference, apart from the internal graphics?
Thanks guys (and maybe girls) :)
