i3 4130 vs Pentium G3258

For a day to day production (excel, photoshop, surfing the web, streaming media) mid range gaming rig.  Which CPU would you guys choose?  To be paired with a GTX 750ti.

Thanks in advance.

If you use Photoshop a good bit, then the 4130, if not, oc the G3258 as in single threaded tasks it will out the 4130.

As you can see, the i3 has a slight edge on the Pentium, and although the Pentiums overclock well, it sounds like you may be building a small or low-power system, which would not be good for overclocking.

So the i3 is what I would go with.

The price to performance of both these CPUs really blows me away, they both seem to have their advantages,  but yes it is for a Mini ITX, low power build, so you might well be correct that cooling a heavily OC'd G3258 may be an issue...   and I do use photoshop pretty heavily...hmmm.

You can get the Pentium to 4.2GHz on the stock cooler before heat becomes a serious issue. If you get a low-profile 92mm+ heatsink it will be fine. I ran the pentium at 4.2GHz with only 1.135v, which should still technically fit your "low-power" requirement while putting out a good bit of performance.

Mileage on voltage/overclock may vary.

the i3 will be much better.

THe pentium G does a good job in games that are only using 1 or 2 threads, but games that are optimized for 4 threads, the pentium doesn´t realy cut it.

For me the i3 or the cheapest i5 no brainer.

Thanks for the advice guys, I've gone with the i3, difficult choice as the Pentium did sound like a lot of fun to overclock etc, but as this rig isn't for me, I would rather it just work and the i3 seems like the budget all rounder good guy.
