I am currently on my first build and I know a decent amount about computers and their components. My question is about two separate things. First here is the current gear I'm looking into: Case: Thermaltake Versa N21, MB: MSI 970 Gaming Motherboard, Processor: AMD FX-8350 8 core, SDD: Kingston Digital 240gb, Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4gb, Power: Corsair CX 600W, RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 16gb 1866MHz, Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO,
OS: Windows 8.1.
First Question is: Is this a good start for a first time build?
Second Question is: Am I missing anything or is there anything that I can change/improve?
Any suggestions will be gladly taken! A big shoutout to the Tek Syndicate team for supplying most of my information!
That looks ok. I think you should add a HDD, just since 240gb ssd is not really enough and 600w is more than enough wattage for this system, but that doesn't truly matter.
Also as far aethetically the Thermaltak Versa looks cheap and the CX power supplies have ugly cables, if you can afford it, buy some cable replacements.
Hey Max, I wanted to say thank you for the input. Well for now I'll stick with the cheap looking aesthetics, and I will definitely consider the HDD upgrade. Do you have any suggestions of a HDD? And will that equipment be a complete build?
what is your overall budget?
What's your budget, and what country?
Are you using it for anything but gaming?
use a hitachi ultrastar 2t 7200rpm
and ^@prosonic
If you are really budget, but if you want to go for more storage, WD Green drives will give you the best bang for your buck.
ProSonic I'm aiming for around 1k at the most just for the actual PC, and the monitor will come later. I'm just focused on creating a decent gaming desktop that won't be too costly, yet all aesthetics either. I'm all about performance. Looks can come later.
I'm not on a super tight budget, but because of a career change I will be a little short for the time being. I can always come back and upgrade. I'm from the U.S.

Either way swap out the 970 for a 390, it's a better card overall
maybe swap the CPU for an i5 if you're only gaming, and grab an SSD or a nicer case
Thanks Streetguru! That is exactly the kind of info I'm looking for. Quick question. What is the difference with the 970 and the 390? And is the Intel Core I7 worth the $$$?
the 390 has 125% more VRAM, potentially better DX12 support, and is just generally faster in most cases, and it'll crossfire better in the future
the i7 is only really worth it if you do more than just gaming, otherwise just grab a cheap locked i5
Does the 390 come with cables? What kind of cables will I need to buy?
It's a video card, so, not really, your monitor will usually come with a cable to hook it up
Ok I wasn't sure of what all goes into that so I'll do some of my own research. It looks very worthy of what I want in a gaming PC. Thanks a lot for the information. I'll gladly take any more advice!
Looks pretty good to me.
HGST drives are a great deal right now. Try ebay/google shopping.
Hey guys so I had a quick question about the AMD 8350. Is it worth the buy? Or should I upgrade to Intel i7? And whats your opinions on the msi r9 390?
