Really not worth doing, why not sell it and get a Fury X? they're about $400 now
Sell it, and buy an R9 Fury X.
the 390 is a fine card I wouldn't take the hit in Vram for a fury x as we are seeing a lot of recent titles eat it up.
Are you considering a custom loop or a aio mounted to the gpu?
A custom water loop isn't worth it unless you intend on including the CPU too, because it makes more economical sense. Just get an AIO on it using Corsair HG10 and call it a day, I recommend a fat 120mm rad or 140 rad like I do with my 290x using Nepton 140XL (which is so effective I run it semi passive).
actually you can catch fury-x on ebay for $~300
The HBM is actually holding up pretty damn well despite only being 4GB. It even bests the GTX 1070, in BF1 under DirectX 12. Heck, it's not far off the GTX 1080 in DX12.
I don't know if you want to add a watercooler, just because "watercooler", or if you are unhappy with your cards temperature.
If the latter is the case - have you heard of, or tried undervolting? I did this on my card recently and was able to achive up to 15°C temperature difference. It stays now at approximately 50 when playing Watch Dogs, and hits 62 when playing Witcher 3. (Haven't tested Dreamfall: Chapters yet, which tremendously strained my GPU to 95°, even when W3 had 72° before undervolting).
8GiB gddr5 vs 4GiB hmb: Even though the fury x has less vram than a 1070, hbm is much faster and more future proof (amd outperforms nvidia in dx12)
Yeah, but most games are Nvidia optimized anyway. Idk. Maybe I ought to just try and finagle a deal on a 1080 somewhere.
I just watercooled both my 390's last week. No regrets lol.
I had to mod a R9 390 waterblock to fit my card, it is an XFX R9 390 with an XSPC waterblock and a part of the copper block had to be removed to fit. but that was a year ago, so they may have made a revision.
Most water cooling sites have a compatibility list.
Not sure if they made a revision or if some just have bad machining but one of the blocks fit perfectly while the 2nd one is slightly bending the PCB of my card. Temps are identical so its not that much of a problem. They're both Powercolor 390s.
