I really want to build something out of computer parts. The rig I have right now is fine, so I don´t need to upgrade anything there, and nobody from my family needs a PC right now. 

So what I need is some alternative Ideas what I could build. The problem is though, I am pretty unable when it comes to coding. So it either must be something that you can do without coding or something that is so easy, even a dummy understands it. A good documentation would be awesome.

I can work with R, which is a statistical programming language. I have taken a peek at Java and Lisp and both were too confusing for me. I also have some basic understanding of Lua. 

Hope you guys can give me some ideas.

 

ps. Moneywise, everything up to like 1000 bucks is fine.

$1000 will build many things ... you could build a ...

  1. killer router
  2. killer NAS
  3. media PCs on every TV
  4. low end game server
  5. personal cloud storage
  6. take over the world ...  no wait . .. that .. is next week.   ????

I´ve just got my tax refund, and since I´m awful with money, I intend to spend it immediately.

That´s some good ideas. I think I will go for a game server. Don´t know what games to host yet, but I´m sure I will figure it out after I set it up.

I would go for a cool case mod maybe.

I would go for something like this. Number 6 sounds...perfect. (insert evil laugh here) I would go with either 2 or 3. Having a NAS would give you a ton of storage and you could experiment with it, too. Number 3 would be PERFECT for me. I love TV shows like Game of Thrones, the CSI series and the Discovery channel. I also have an entire 500GB drive filled with music. You could put a ton of movies and THINGS on them.

Is there a good place to look up a how-to? I´m usually pretty bad when it comes to art.

I´ve read some threads now, and I´m not sure if I should go for a low-end Server for now, since I will be mainly hosting Minecraft/Terraria and a mumble server, or go for something beefier in case I want to host some other games.

I am not sure. Maybe google it or find a youtube walkthrough.
