My problem is I was installing my psu, which is a thermltake 875watt toughpower (80 plus bronze) for my 6950. Now, I placed strain on my sata cables, which caused a "static" flamely short out now my hard drives and ssd my motherboard, cpu, ram and optical drive detects. Its happened twice now.
Though when I had my old antec 550 watt true power Powersupply, with my old gts 450 no problems occoured. Once I placed my 6950 and 875 watt psu in the existing system it killed my HDD'S and ssd. I then bought another mobo, ssd and hdds and killed them again.
I think my PSU is the reason my SATA controller dies. If someone could tell me the reason that'll be nice.
Some obvious questions:
-Were you grounded when installing the PSU? (I doubt ESD could occur twice doing the same thing)
-Was the PSU plugged into the wall?
If you saw smoke or flames, RMA the PSU and defective parts. I'm not sure how good Thermaltake power supplies are, but when lots of components short at the same time, the power supply is the culprit.
Thermaltake psu's aren't exactly the best but are better than corsairs cx series.
But even with that in mind i would try and swap the psu at the store for a different one, if you can.
better than the CX series? corsair is one of the best psu manufatureres ou there, although, the innards are supposedly made by seasonic
I was not grounded no strap was needed as psu's are all metal, it wasnt plugged into the wall. The only time I plugged it in, was to test it out for like two seconds in order to see if I plugged in the front pannel connecters right. which I did. (This was without a monitor kb ect.) Plugged in.
Though this PSU is old, but not that old. The 875 watt thermaltake worked perfectly when I had it in my old i5 750 1156 system in crossfire (6950).Now my 8350 system isn't good enough for it. It keeps killing my sata ports which is pissing me off badly. Also my motherboard ports would not power on my kb.
The antec would would great, with everything apart from the 6950 as its not powerful enough.
So, do you think I should by another psu and clearly a mobo. Like an antec, corsair, nzxt, coolermaster ect? As i'm really sick and tired of this shit!
Note: My cpu, ram and motherboard powers on....just the sata ports would not detect.
Since it happened twice with the PSU causing the issue, buy a new PSU from the likes of Corsair, Antec, XFX, or Seasonic.
I may do that..... As I'm tired, of this happening. Are thermaltakes good psu's though? Or do you think its a crappy brand?
Corsair doesn't make squat, they are parts assemblers and a technology design company that rebrands other companies' products after they sell them a design to produce. Those Corsair PSUs are in fact built and assembled in the Seasonic factory and Corsair merely states what the specifications the PSU must adhear to for them to sell the PSU for Seasonic. This is why Corsair PSUs are typically a percentage more expensive than Seasonic themselves. You are paying for branding and QC control.
Thermal take psu´s arent that bad at all. i think its a better idea, to look if there is any short cirquit arround... maybe your mobo, somewhere makes contact to the chasis, could be a screw or something. i would say take the mobo out of the system lay it on a box, connect everything, and try to fire it up outside the case.
I think i might go with antec.
I've done that already. None.
But, Ive opened it up my PSU..... I've smelt something a little something in the pcb. The first and last tme I go with thermaltake. I'm thinking I should go with antec or corsair.
Do you guys think a 550watt is more than enough to power a 8350 system. Or should I buy a 650 watt?
amd 8350
8gb ram(1333mhz kingston)
gigabyte gts450
gigabyte 990fxa-ud3
3 hdds 1tb(sata 3), 500 gb (sata 3) and 500 gb ( sata 2)
(sata 6gb/s and 3gb/s at 7200 rpm from segate)
1 SSD Intel 533 series (sata 3)
Let me know.
Wow, didn't you electrocuted yourself whist opening up the PSU? You should just go ahead with the RMA if you know your PSU is gone without initiating further actions to the PSU.
Actually no I didn't...... It was fine.
550W is enough i would say look up a decent brand XFX, Lepa , Seasonic, corsair (not the builders) etc.
Cool, will do. This bloody light show is a killer! I hope my antec 550 watt will fix it. Otheriwise I'm going to buy a corsair 600- 650 watt.
I'm having trouble finding any reviews on the Antec VP650P 650W, I'm sorta on a tight budget for my PSU and it's only $85. Is this a good PSU? Or for one more dollar should I get a Antec Neo Eco 80Plus Bronze 620w $86.
Also would this be ok..... for the build I previously stated before?
$85 will get you a Lepa G 650, which is noticeably better than the Nec Eco in terms of quality.
Though they don't sell that at my pc store. They only sell the neo eco and vp from antec and other brands. But not.... That make/model.
