I think I'm going to be $ick - Maxwell price drop

The day I feared has arrived.

Nvidia has dropped the price of the GTX 980Ti to about what I paid for my 970. It is even the orange one that I wanted to match my Silent Base 800. I had a case of my ancient (660 SLI) GPU's were driving me crazy and I couldn't wait for Pascal or Polaris. I have no complaints with the 970, but a 980Ti would be better. D'oh!

This happens every cycle.

There are cooling issues with the MSI Twinfrozr on AMD's side, is it the same thing with Nvidia? I wouldn't buy this.

Sell 970, buy 980Ti?

No such problem with nVidia. Plus the GE is full copper, has quite a bit of cooling performance.

only a matter of time for the 980Ti to perform like a 970 did at launch now that it's at that price...

Yeah the Hawai chip is just a realy damm hot ship, it produces allot of heat that needs to be dissipated.
You cant realy compair that with a GM204 / GM200

Good I never cared to check on the differents coolers performance for nvidia cards since I'm sticking with AMD cards only. I hope MSI gets it's shit together with the RX series!

I have no need for a 980Ti to push my 1080p 60Hz screen. When I go 4K or 144Hz I will need a 1080 or better so I can wait. I have no cooling problems with my MSI 970. At the time of purchase it was my best choice and I have been totally happy with it.

Until today...

Yeah well that allways happens wenn new stuff comes out. ☺

I think it was ASUS where someone could not use a ruler correctly and therefor managed to have only half the cooler contact the core. Might be the same for MSi.

Gotta be patient man, I'm still waiting on the RX 480

Although I'd still say maxwell's going to be a bad buy in the long run given the lack of A-sync support

spoiler, the 1080 chokes at 4k.

Exactly:
Relative specs of the 1080 and 980ti

http://wccftech.com/nvidia-geforce-900-series-price-cuts-2016/

980ti consume about as much power as a 390x. So assuming that the cooling design is insufficient for a 390x, it should be insufficient for a 980ti.

An overclocked 980ti (even factory OC) gives even the the 1080 a run for its money, showing up the 1070. No reason to get a 1070 at this point until the 980tis go back up in price or start becoming scarce.

Hence why i said it's only a matter of time before Nvidia nerfs the 980Ti...

They wouldn't sell a better card for less, that's just bad marketing (and Nvidia has nearly mastered the art of marketing)

They do love their nerfing.

I can think of a reason. I can't afford or justify spending more than a 1070. Even getting my 970 was a big purchase for me. #1070sR4poorpeople
