I need to get rid of background noise on my mic

So I bought a mod mic, and for some reason I am getting a lot of static in it. In windows my mobo has a utility to deal with noise suppression that gets rid of the static. However this utility doesn't work in Linux. Is there a program I can use for this in linux?

Audacity?
Have you tried it? It's free, so no harm done...
I use it to remove background noise...
You record your audio, then record like 10 seconds of noise, use it as noise profile in audacity noise remove tool and you are golden...

Usually use it to remove the whir sound coming from my computer if I do any recording. Works well if you have a constant sound so like @psycho_666 said just make sure you keep silent for the beginning or end of the recording for audacity to find the sound profile and remove / lessen it.

I need to work live so that it isn't a problem for my discord chat.

Sorry I didn't say that earlier. I use OBS to record, and it already has a filter for this.

Well that changes things up a bit XD, you could try a cheap usb headphone / mic adapter like this:

I don't think that would fix my problem because I have tried both the front panel and rear mic in ports.

Sometimes the onboard sound is the culprit. I get static on mine when I use the mic boost setting. When I switched to a USB condenser mic it all went away.

Ok I will try buying one then. But that kinda defeats the purpose of buying the Asus boards for their audio quality.

Well the other option is to try to turn the mic down to reduce the hiss...or try to use a different mic. The problem I think you're having is with gain.

I have this problem no matter how far down I turn the mic, even if I leave at almost off. The static just goes down at the same ratio as the sound.

I just want to chime in on the cheap external usb audio. It instantly fixes the hiss on mod mics. I bought a really cheap one from china for just over a dollar, and it works well, the hiss is no more. I use motherboard output for my headphones because output sound is not good on those usb devices.

Thank you

I was in your situation last year and had to search a lot, and the solution was that simple.

Mine should be here tuesday

I have that. It's pretty good

I had a similar problem with my modmic. For me, the noise was coming from the onboard sound. I now use an external USB sound card whenever I need my mic, works perfect.

Yes mine came in and fixed my sound issue.

Pulseaudio in Linux actually has this functionality. I don't remember how I set it up though but it does work. Perhaps I can look later today to my desktop machine if I can trace that back.

But if you google "pulseaudio noise cancellation" you'll find it exists and (as usual) can be activated a few different ways.

I had that particular problem on a Z87 board I once had til I bought a USB DAC. I then upgraded to a Z97 and the noise was gone but I'm sure a DAC will resolve the issue for u.
