I need help because I thought I was doing this right but I'm either stupid or my uncle is lying or wrong. So I'm building my first desktop. Here's some quick specs, Asus z97-a motherboard, Intel i5, 8gb ram, evga 750ti ftw, and western digital blue 1 tb hdd. So the case (rosehill redbone u3) came with fans, I'm fine with using those but he said since the fans are 3 pin and the board has 4 pin connectors. He said that won't work. And he says that I HAVE to do a raid 0 or 1 for the HDD to work. and that with a 1tb drive, windows will take all space except for 100 gb.. And that the drive isn't fast enough and my computer won't run. On sorry if this isn't formatted right, he also took out thr watch battery from the board because apparently I don't need it. I was in a hurry to type this because he's making me mad, sorry if isn't formatted correctly. Please reply whenever you can. I'm still trying to tell him that he's wrong. So am I wrong? Or is he right?
Are you real?
deja vu
Your uncle is messing with you.
Deja - someone's posted something really similar before - vu
Watch battery? You mean the Cmos battery? you definitely need that
'read list of absurd statements'
Your uncle is playing around with you most likely
Yes I'm real! Do I come across as a robot? Sorry I was in a hurry typing that.
He is? Good I was starting to feel dumb, I'm still new at this but not THAT new. Thank you. I can't get him to understand that 3 pin fans work on a 4 pin connector.
Not a troll! I'm dead serious! Thank you, though he still won't believe me or you if I show him your reply. I just know that this build will work. Thank you!
Going to add to that. RAID is impossible for a single drive. Redundant Array of Independent Disks.
In my experience Windows uses about 18GB, and maybe 6GB more, depending on the size of the hibernation file and page file.
You know what they say then, you can't fight stupid. Someone so deeply believing themselves that they reject all other truths in place of their own.
I want what your uncle is smoking. Seriously... taking out the cmos battery cause you dont need it, like wtf? More like he needs it.
Advice,
1. get parts
2. lock the door
3. build the rig following one of the many guides available.
4. dis-own uncle
Good idea! Luckily I'm at his house (if you need any more proof that he's not right, still lives at home with his mom and is 45.) so I'm taking this home and doing it right. Thank you for the reply!
Is the same person, back in may 7th. They have slowly been getting the parts it seems.
That might need a double facepalm.
Three pin fans will work, just they will spin at full speed as the fourth pin is for more control of the fans.
The watch battery is your CMOS, it keeps the BIOS powered. Without the CMOS your bios will reset and lose any changes you made and the time/date.
You can use a flash drive as a boot drive, yes a 7200rpm harddrive is considered slow by SSDs of today. An HD will do fine for a first time builder/budget. You can get an SSD later.
Raid on a single hard drive... impossible. Raid 0 requires at least two hard drives. Other raids require even more storage devices, and they must be similar if not the same model.
For you HD you can make partitions. Might be smart to do, maybe not.
Your uncle needs to watch this video.
Maybe give him some lotion and leave him alone as well.
