I need some help deciding on a ISP

I live in Fayettville Arkansas, and was wondering what the best internet service provider would be, something at least 1 Mbps.

1mps? do you want dial up kuz thats free now mate lol even with at&t's dsl there lowest package is 6mps

http://arkansas.theispguide.com/

it looks like Time Warner has a $15.99 per month package thats 50mps but you gota read to see what it jumps to after that year

You have more than one option?! lol
No idea what you have available there and it depends on which side of the street you're on. You're going to need to check your address on their sites. ATT is now imposing data caps on new users and Comcast has been doing that for months. I also have a suspicion that ATT has deliberately making our connection shitty to some end. If we call them up to complain they will probably try to get us to switch our plan so they can slap us with a data cap. So not sure what to tell you. 1mbps shouldn't be too hard to find though. That's entry level DSL speed.

Whoever doesn't have a data cap

That site isn't very accurate. I have 18mbps from Uverse in Florida and that isn't even listed on that site.

sad i just google it dont normally search for isp's for places not near me.

Thanks man. There are just so many shitty companies it id hard to know which are the best for your money.

yeah all the isp's will try to screw you over you just gota find the price your willing to pay ad deal with the speed thats available at that price.

In an ideal world that qould be great.

Chances are if you are in the USA you don't really have a choice.

Where I live I'm lucky enough to be able to choose between cable and dsl. Except for the fact dsl here is 3mbps vs cable that 250mbps.

So really there is no comparison especially when they cost nearly the same(without bundling, which reall, who needs telephone and tv when you have The Internet). $8 difference a month.

Also both have caps so again there is no choice.

So dig deeper when you goto order service for your place. Your local providers my offer a variety of speeds to their customers, just not all their customers.
The infrastructure near your home will determine actual speeds.
Sometimes, if you order over the phone the person can give you a reasonable expectation.
Others you will be lied to. Just make sure you don't sign a contract without a return policy or money back guarantee.

If you can get refund guarantees from multiple companies honestly order from all of them and compare for yourself. Could be one huge month's cost but in the long run you won't be stuck with the wrong one.
Sounds stupid but its what i have done the last 2 times I moved.

Good luck.

Is 1 Mbps fast enough for gaming?

depends on what game but most likely no, i would recommend 3mps minimum for 1 person, and another 3mps for every person added, me and my girlfriend play on a 6mps connection... we used to play on a 3mps connection but it didn't work so well depending on the time of day.

I would recommend at least 5.

The reason being is that anything below 10 is most likely going to be DSL. The DSL infrastructure is so over saturated and faulty that a 3mb/s connection is going to act more like a 2Mb/s connection and will sometimes dip down to 1 during heavy usage hours.

5Mb/s down will give you a much more solid connection.

@Awbra_Cadabra

Its impossible to answer your question.

Sometimes your ISP providers can change just from street to street. When I lived in virginia, our neighborhood had verizon DSL and dial up. The max download speed was 3Mb/s.

The neighborhood right next to us had comcast cable with a max download speed of 50Mb/s.

So unless you gave us a street address (WHICH YOU SHOULD NOT DO), we can not truly help you out.

Do not post your address.

Lol I am not going to, thanks for your help guys!

The other thing you can simply do is talk to your neighbors.

If you see one walking around, just stop them and ask. Chances are you will get an honest answer about which ISP is good or bad very quickly lol.

most places have 4 options dsl, cable, wireless tower and satellite.

DSL is usually the best in most cases since it has no data cap,it's low latency for games and your connection isn't shared with other people in your area like cable so you get the full 5+mb/s speed at all times. vdsl is way faster at 50mb/s but it normally isn't available or has caps.

tower is the second best since it normally offers 150mb/s with throttling under heavy use but no data caps. in most cases at night you won't see any throttling since those are low use hours. you can game but expect occasional lag if your far away from the tower.

the same can be said for satellite but it has the highest latency and you'd be lucky to use it for more then 5minutes a day before you drop down to dial-up speeds.

finally you have cable that normally data caps to 250gb per month but on the bright side you can easily reach at-least 1MB/s(8mb/s) on the worst day.at-least I was able to get 2MB/s in new york on time warner cable.
