I need a way to clone HDDs

First off, I don't have any experience in IT.
At my job we are unable to pay for IT support so we had to cancel with the company we were using. So therefore, my boss naturally said, "Hey let's use the CNC guy (i.e. Me) who's leaving in two months to go back to school for electrical engineering to do it." I have no problem doing this because I hopefully will learn something new by it and because I care about this company. What I want to find is a way to clone all the HDD's on the computers at work in to ISO like files on my and the owner's 4 TB HDDs for safe keeping. All of these systems are either working on windows 7 or XP. My theory is if any of these systems stop working I can pop in a new HDD and clone over the old from the back up.
So what I need to know is:

A) Is my theory even possible.
B) What do I need to do and/or what software do I need to do it.
Thank you guys so much for helping if you can.

Research disk imaging and imaging software. It's not something I've done since windows xp so maybe someone else has more procedural recommendation. I do remember having to back up my registry separately and re-installing a few programs. It will probably be easier to do without security software.

This might be a bit an inconvenience, but it seems as though you could use dd. You'd probably end up using a live Linux disk if you did that.

http://clonezilla.org/ Might be a good place to begin your search for the software you need.
