Moto x 2014, awesome stock android phone, and should have android l in less than 30 days, not to mention that it is pretty cheap.

If your looking for a non flagship phone the Moto G is your best bet. Snapdragon 400 with 1 GB of RAM isnt something to sneeze on for how much it cost. Only $200 U.S. dollars for the 16 GB of storage. Im not sure if it has a Micro SD card on the 2nd gen ones. I know the 1st gen LTE ones has it.

Sadly no SD card still. They are continuing with the Google storage options.

I have been looking at the IP67/8 water proof, shock proof ones. Technically not so great but a phone that can survive my handling might be a good idea.

Be warned though, I've been told that chinese wholesale phones either don't  have LTE or have very poor reception when it comes to LTE

Yeah that is considered "safe" but I'm sure you can install a 128+ GB SD Card.
