I need a new cheap-o router/modem!

Hi,
So basically my parents are still running a Sagecom Modem/Router/Hub combo provided by their ISP, it’s maximum WiFi bandwidth is 54Mbps, their internet connection to the house is 10-19MbpsDown, and the Router restarts about 5 times a day.
The ISP will not provide a new router without charging around £40.
So my question is; Can anyone suggest a Router/Hub solution OR an ADSL Modem/Router/Hub?
(Budget <£35, I don’t know if the ISP will allow that, the ISP is BSkyB).

Cheers,
Nic

Do they need a fancy router? Do they use the local network for file transfers? i.e. is there any reason to get more than 54Mbps? Do they have smartphones with wireless N?

If not you could get away with something like this Belkin for £23 from Scan. The only major downside is that there is no WPA2 security. How important this is, is up to yourself.

Otherwise you could bump up a bit and grab this TP-Link. It's wireless N and has WPA2. It will definitely do the job and comes in on budget. Not the best modem ever but that all depends on your use case anyway. If you don't need the extra features, then it will do just fine.

Most WiFi devices have N, bandwidth isn't a big deal no, however the amount of devices being used simultaneously now can get up to 7+, which the router can't cope with, would that be an issue with that many devices on the Belkin?

The TP-LINK looks like a good bet, I'm not sure on how to set-up a modem for an ISP.

Okay if that is 7 devices trying to access constantly (people coming home from school/work around the same time), then you are going to have a problem. Especially if people are trying to watch videos.

With that in mind I'd just go with the TP-Link. It's £10 extra and seems to give you the extra value in features. The total bandwidth increase and range increase would make it worth it and the proper security is just the icing on the cake.

I only picked one website had a quick browse for "Networking - ADSL". Shop around and see if you can get a better deal.

www.amazon.co.uk
www.overclockers.co.uk
www.novatech.co.uk
www.ebuyer.co.uk.

Setting up the modem isn't that difficult but you need to get the specific settings for your ISP.

I searched for "[ISP name] ADSL settings"

The settings will look something like this.

Username: [email protected]
Password: broadband1
Encapsulation: PPPoE
Multiplexing: LLC Based
VPI: 8
VCI: 35

Cool, I'll check a couple places out, I've got a few local PC shops that sometimes have some decent prices too, I'll also have a look on Sky's Forum for ISP settings.
Cheers for your help!
