i just download too much media
between my tv shows multiple times a week
and the anime and whatnot
ive already killed my new 8tb hdd
its got like 40 gb free
granted, i loaded like 90% of it up with backups of like almost 4 or 5 other hdds that i removed from my pc to make it more quiet
ive been telling myself to get and or build a NAS for a long long time now
and i think its just about time to actually get on with it
im just sorta scared of using RAID
ive heard at data densities this high *8TB+ per hdd
chances are, if a drive dies, the raid will fail before the time that the New replacement drive is completely rebuilt
which in my mind means
if your going to do a raid, then you need at least double drive redundancy
so that you can survive 2x hdd failures simultaneously
so if there is a point of failure, then the source pc will have a backup
or if the pc fails then the nas has the backup
thad be cool, and alot cheaper then loosing hdd space to redundancy
i think tho, id like a nas box that could survive the coming apocalypse
something that i can set up once and never look at again, preferably with at least gigabit ethernet so i can use the nas to run even my steam library from with out a big lag save and run my media from the nas to my pc from
for a 2 drive failure protection then i need to start with what ? 4 or 5 hdds ?
and with a raid 6 doesnt that also add the chance to corrupt my data too ?
i did a good amount of data pruning when i moved off of the old 4-5 hdds and compressed it all to this single new 8TB unit its all at this point anime and movies and random stuff like that but it grows a gig or 2 each week just from the tv and anime that i watch as it airs
never delete always remember
when they elect the next us prez.. and the inevitable dark times start when they kill the internet, ill need enough media for the bunker....
Seagate IronWolf ST10000VN0004 10TB 256MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive $448.99 @ newegg
$448.99 & FREE Shipping. @ amazon
8tb cost per tb is 40.37 10tb cost per tb is 44.9 not a mondo big difference looking at $ 2500 to start, yeesh. this is EXACTLY why ive not built a nas yet,,,
You can't add disks to a raid 6 in any file system I know of. I prefer ZFS Raid Z2 for obvious reasons, bit rot prevention and Raid6 double disk failure protection, etc;. How much usable do you think you need? I can see if there is a combination of lower capacity drives that makes more sense.
hmmmm well ive already got 8TB of shit so 10TB+ will be a MINIMUM just to last me a while im sucking down about say 1-2 GB per week just in tv shows and anime call it 1.2gb a week in anime 3-400MB an episode
Freenas with ZFS is a very good option, probably the safest. (Is that a word?) One of the bigger synologys would also fit. I bet QNAP and others have similar solutions but I only know those two systems. And as much as I like the capabilities of ZFS, in daily use I prefer the Synology DSM. The UI is like a full blown desktop OS in a browser
I have my critical data on my main rig and on an offsite backup machine as well. So in case of something horrible I would only lose movies and shows and music and so on.
Actually, ZFS requires direct access to the drives. So no hardware RAID controller. There is a Tek Syndicate video on their NAS from about a year ago I think. They were using the ASRock Avoton board as well. Search for that.
The reason I went with the Xeon instead of that Avoton is because your streaming all that media, you would probably benefit from having a stronger cpu to encode. Never go hardware raid controller with FreeNas, ZFS needs direct access to the drives. True HBA's are okay, but onboard is preferable IMO. Software Raid as done by windows or by other operating systems that lack pretections against bit-rot is not trust worthy, But ZFS and BTRFS among others do support features to prevent any bit rot.
