I’m looking for a monitor

I’m looking for a monitor and I have an odd use case scenario.

First, I use Xposure X7 for photo editing, but I only work in black and white. I convert all my color images into B&W and I’m not really interested in super accurate color, I’m more interested in resolution, brightness and contrast. I will use color for family snapshots, but for my fine art landscape work it’s always B&W.

Second, I game. I’d like to game with a higher Hz monitor at 1440p with Freesync. I play all sorts of games, from Diablo III, Elite Dangerous, the upcoming Diablo IV, and Valheim. I would also like the option to be able to play some of the more demanding AAA titles.

I just built an AMD Ryzen 7 5800x machine with 32 gig of ram and a placeholder graphics card, the RX 6500 XT. I’m going to be getting an RX 6700 or 6700 XT in June.

I currently have the LG 32UN500-W 32" UHD 60 Hz Monitor . I have been running it as a 1080p panel because of the 6500 XT and the text is way too small at 4k for these old eyes. I like the 32” size and would be willing to go a larger size for 4k when I edit my photos.

So, something that plays games at 1440p and black and white photo editing at 1440p or 4k at around the $500 price point. Would be willing to stretch that for a really nice monitor that will last me many years.

Thanks for your suggestions!

if you want a editing monitor, get a ASUS PROART hands down the best!, Dells ultrasharp line and Benq both make very good monitors as well for videoediting. Personally, I’m using 2 32 inch LG monitors for my personal rig, and a 24 16:10 dell and asus for my work setup. LGs typically come color calibrated if i’m not mistaken. Is there any specific reason you can’t do editiing on one of your LG’s ? IMHO, 1440p 120/1440htz is the sweet spot for high fps gaming. 4k is still insanely expensive for high refresh rate. Much less color accuracy.

Thanks for the reply! The reason I’m not going to use the LG 4k that I have is, it’s only 60 Hz and it’s a VA panel. 32" is too small for 4K IMHO, I have a hard time reading text when set to 4K. It also does not have a great viewing angle, the corners get weird.

I have been looking around and this seems like a good compromise for gaming and doing my B&W photo editing:

MSI Full QHD Anti-Glare 1ms 2560 x 1440 175Hz 31.5” Monitor (Optix MPG321QRF-QD).

It has a Rapid IPS Panel and color reproduction of 99% Adobe RGB. It being 1440p and 32" is a size I’d be happy with.

I looked at the BenQ SM 27 inch 1440p monitor and at $800 it’s way too much for me. Looks great for doing B&W photo editing though.

Thanks again for the reply!

NP. Be careful if you do 1440p at 32 inches, if you are far away it’s completely fine, but if you are 18 inches or closer, sometimes it starts to look blurred and pixelated, as the ppi is a LOT lower than 1440p 27 inches. Unless you have a unique case, I would just do 125 or 150% scaling on a 4k panel, as then you have more room to play with.

I have tested this 4K LG at 1440p at 28" away from the screen and it looks ok. I’m sure a native 1440p IPS panel will look better.
