So I had a 2009 Mabook (the white one) and I had upgraded the RAM to 8gb and increased the size of the HDD but because Apple hate their customers it got slower and slower with every update. Not manditory updates but if I wanted the software I'd paid for to work it was necessary.
I have been gaming on PC for about 5 years now and have been slowly rebuying all of my software, I finally bought Photoshop so really didn't need the Mac for anything.
I created a partition, installed Linux Mint to it and spent 5 minutes playing with it. Then I erased the partition, deleted everything and installed Linux Mint again, RIP OSX I will never see you again.
Why didn't anyone tell me Linux was this awesome,
I think I will keep Windows gaming rig but mostly just so I can search strangling and charity while the government snoop.
I installed Linux Mint, I also installed Eco and Ubuntu and like them both too.
I think Mint is going to be great on this laptop. I use it in the evening for browsing and writing. For a laptop keyboard this MacBook is great and I can type almost as fast as I can on my mechanical.
Eco looked nice and Ubuntu was cool but for every day, I will have to say Windows, prior to moving to mac for work and then at home to make things easier, I used Windows.
I am using Windows 10 and it makes sense. I can find the things I need, things work with it and for gaming its awesome.
I will honestly say though, I cannot see why Linux Mint couldn't give it a run for its money in time. If the driver support steps up and all PC games worked then why would you use Windows?
I have only been using Linux for two days now, I have yet to be hampered in what I am doing but I am not working on this laptop other than writing.
I don't have to chose but if I did right now I would have to stick to windows on my main PC but that is only because I have so much money invested and haven't faced any issues yet.
Thanks I will give it a whirl. I am only two days in but I am a creature or habit so I think once I get used to something I won't like to change. May need to try all the distros over the next few weeks and pick a favourite.
Should be stated though I am in no way a power user. I am a try it and if it breaks google it until I fix it.
I did try multiple distributions and desktop environments just to get familiar with what's out there. Overall, not a lot of things caught my eye in a "I want to have that on windows" way.
I just don't like desktop software on linux. To me it lacks a certain degree of polish. I wouldn't like using it over windows even if it did have all games, and all of them performed as well as on windows (most linux ports use opengl wrappers, and that affects performance).
And aside from games, I use some software that's not coming to linux any time soon.
I am not talking about loosing 30 minutes or something small, we are talking at least an hour of battery. Probably more if you want to use google chrome over firefox.
Also, 6 hours is still peanuts. Its going to be 6 hours minus the decay from the battery, minus linux, minus other bull shit, we are probably only looking at 3-4 hours of real use which is pretty bad IMO.
Happy to hear you had a good experience man. Remember is you have any issue it is likely that you will be able to fix things without re-installing.
it you backup your /home directory you can almost complete blow away any distro. Install new distro and copy back /home and it is almost as if you had always used it.
2 hours on my ibook is good enough for me o: anything longer than 2 hours is gold. I've only ever had used laptops and only got one brand new. Longest battery was 2 hours. Theres a reason I don't like batteries :P
Not shitty, nae, I like to take old stuff and see what I can do with it. It just so happens that all my laptops that I have seriouly used have been workstation laptops with dead batteries. Not really my fault on that its just how they came.
Hey man just wanted to thank you again, its been a couple of days now and I actually think this is one of the best OS's I have ever used. It is awesome.
As for battery, its a 6 year old mac, the battery has been dead for about 4 years. I got about an hour of use on osx and now I am running Manjaro I am getting about 2 hours so maybe something was draining by battery too fast on OSX but I couldn't be happier.
