I have a new work computer with a intel i9 14900 that is giving very odd behavior.
The computer
Precision 3460
with 14900 and 32 gb of ram.
bios date november 2024
Windows 11
Aspen hysys v10 (engineering software) (with a custom extension that has been used without this issue for years)
Issue
When running a particular class of simulations the simulation will fail/ crash 90% of the time, and complete successfully 10% of the time. The actual application seems to crash more often, but I’m mainly interested in the extension crashing.
Resolutions:
run on a 11th gen intel laptop or core ultra laptop. So far we have not been able to replicate this on other computers, but we have no other 14th or 13th gen processors in my local workgroup.
If I open other applications that take cpu time such as google meet, prime 95, or a crashed version of hysys, the simulation will complete near 100% of the time ( I have not witnessed a faileure)
If I set affinity to 1-4 cpus, including p core, ecore, and mix of p and e cores it will not crash. It only crashes when the task has no affinity. or more than 4 cpu affinity set. But does not crash on a core ultra 9 185HX laptop.
My best guess is that there is something about peak boost that is causing a problem but really I have no idea.
prime 95 runs with no issue with 1 thread or all threads.
The point of this message is to remind people to validate software for each computer setup.
