I hate to Nitpick Logan, but what do you see in "China"?

For awhile I have been wanting to write this, but I wanted to wait and see if I could see what Logan sees in China. You obviously love it, buddy. But I've been here for 3 months now and I just don't see why you love it.

I think, think , I know why you like it. I think. But we need to discern something there. Hong Kong is not "The People's Republic of China" (a.k.a. "Mainlaind China"), nor is Taiwan.
I can agree with you, Logan, that Hong Kong is an amazing place that is almost like stepping a few years in the future with how well maintained their infrastructure is. I have not been to Taiwan yet, but I can only assume it is much the same.
Meanwhile, The People's Republic of China - Mainland China - this includes cities such as Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Beijing (where I live) - is far...FAR from this technological holy land you speak of.
Cities closer to Hong Kong are more modern, such as Shenzhen - but even Shenzhen's infrastructure cannot compare to Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, I've been in Beijing, and for the first while, yeah, I loved it - it was because of the novelty of a new culture. But that has now worn off. The infrastructure here is crap and is falling apart faster than America's. Mainland China is more concerned about building new stuff and less concerned about maintaining the existing stuff. The Metro doesn't even extend to where I live because they haven't bothered adding new stops, the roads are a clusterfuck - most roads don't even have lines painted on them any more because they have been worn off with time and never repainted. Not that that matters much, driving habits here are even more of a clusterfuck than the roads - that's a different story though.
The most difficult part I have been dealing with is the absolutely garbage internet here. Everything is blocked, and the internet that isn't blocked...well...you'll be lucky to connect to. Connections are as intermittent as a poor wireless signal.
I recently bought Battleborn and I can't even connect to the servers to play a single laggy match. Even if the internet page is not blocked, I HAVE to use a VPN because it gives a more reliable connection, but my VPN is wrapped in so much encryption that I might as well be using dial-up.

And that is just the infrastructure. The people are rude, inconsiderate, and have numerous disgusting habits.
One of the families was telling me how a lot of people in [Mainland] China commit suicide because of their habit of spreading ill-gossip about people to ultimately ruining their reputation.

So, here's a few things:
1) Hong Kong is NOT Mainland China. If you did not know that, then...now you know! :D And I absolutely agree with you, Hong Kong is great. Aside from the large number of people, they are generally very friendly, very nice, and the infrastructure there is very well supported.
2) If you did know about the separation between Mainland China and Hong Kong, then, please tell me what I am not seeing in China. What made you love [Mainland] China so much? I want to know so that maybe I can open my eyes and have a slightly more enjoyable experience.

Dude you better be careful what you post about China while you're over there. They'll disappear your ass or you'll end up "hiking on the countryside and accidently wandered into North Korean territory."

FWIW,

I love China, lived there over 1 year.
I love Taiwan, living here about 2 years on and off now.
I liked HK when I visited.
(I liked many parts of USA when visited 30+ states, I don't like Canada so much - a little too liberal and often don't realise how lucky they are like Australia where I'm from. But any are better quality of life than all Asia.)

China, like India and most of the world suck due to corruption. Every country has it, but Taiwan and HK are much more westernised or Americanised like Japan and Korea. They are better than China in this respect. People should realise that as a main reason when they look down on China compared to other places.
China's other problem is culture - mainly they are gross in behaviour, but that just reflects their lack of modernisation - smoking along the street all day, spitting even on carpet in restaurants, driving like morons (plenty in Taiwan too though).
But they are also great sometimes and have such a rich history (which I study).

But in a nutshell, corruption explains most of their problems. That and its 'every man for himself' - there's no true loyalty to the state, because the Chinese might "love" their country, but they also hate it because its such a mess (and full of assholes).

On the other hand, its a country of 1,300,000,000 people - its more diverse than you could ever imagine, so you can't tar all of the country with the same brush!!
Again like any country - there are rich pricks, and there are kind, humble people. As usual, its a shame the scumbags don't get what they deserve and the good people suffer, but is that gonna change anywhere anytime soon?

Also, nobody can say they know what good food is until they come over this side of the world :)

Yeah, China definitely has a lower standard of living.

But the US is being castrated by fundamentalist Christianity. When there is still drama over whether evolution is taught in schools or if Climate Change exists, can we possibly hope to not be passed up by China? The middle east were the leaders of the world, then fundamentalist Islam took hold and the west became the leaders, and now fundamentalist Christianity is gimping the west, its soon going to be the East's turn.

fyi, I'm still here.

At the end of the day, China and its people are just like any other in that they have their ups and downs. In America, the mainstream view and opinion towards China is not in the best light, with a lot of these based off of ignorance and, in some cases, fear. We all know that Logan dislikes mindless drone-ism, so he's playing devil's advocate and showing some of the more positive aspects of China.

Beyond that, though, there is a lot to say about the subject. China is in the process of urbanizing a larger portion of their population, and there is no one story to be told about how that is taking place. The larger areas have the benefit of modern methods and implementations, but some of the more "provincial" or rural areas don't even get the benefit of pipe traps in their plumbing. :|

any lead china has over the US will be short lived. the main reason they have so many manufacturing jobs is because their weak currency makes it cheap to produce goods.

if the yaun becomes too strong odds are all the jobs will move to Mexico. because of Mexico's close proximity to the US it already has a major cost advantage in terms of shipping. not to mention that the language barrier isn't as great and quality control should be easier.

that said if trump wins and builds his stupid wall china might have nothing to worry about.

It wasn't so much a comment about the biggest economies. But who is going to make the important technological breakthroughs in the future. Like the US's hesitance to experiment with human embryos. The US being resistant to develop clean energy because of their skepticism of science. Or i think like China is starting to grow meat instead of butcher it and i don't see that catching on in the US in the next 100 years even if it was vastly more cost efficient. The closemindedness of Americans are going to going to cost them a lot long term.

I never said I wanted to live there. The internet situation makes it difficult to work. However, I love the food. It's my favorite food on earth and I really hate American Chinese food. I like the people and the culture too. I am fine with the driving. It's more aggressive, but without the ego or road rage.

With the infrastructure, it seems they are trying to move people into the cities and are not worrying about the areas outside of that as much. They might be growing fast, but their middle class is growing too.

You can find plenty to complain about in most places. VT was my favorite state... some people complain that it's too cold, there isn't enough fast food, and the people are too open minded. I like those things, some may not. So, to each his own. I really like China for many reasons. HK and Taiwan are very different, but I like them too.

people seriously complain about others being too open minded?

"Hong kong isn't part of mainland china"

Don't let china hear you say that

I personally have only been to Hong Kong and Macau. They where amazing, I fucking love them, I wish I could go back soon especially Hong Kong.

Mainland china is pretty meh from what I've heard from relatives that live in Hong Kong

p.s. Technically it's part of mainland china now...

Bullshit, he has no problem profitting off the backs of illegal immigrants.

He'll pass advocate some bullshit that makes it look like he's tough on immigration for his voter base while pocketing the money from the labor of illegals who are too scared to fight for a living wage like any good capitalist would.

the closed mindedness you refer to only really applys to the bible belt. the rest of the country is about equal to what you can expect in Europe as far as progressiveness goes.

regardless messing with human stem cells is frowned on in just about any western country not just the united states. however no one has problems with cultivating cow/chicken meat as long as it's done correctly.

if they force fast production by pumping the meat with hormones, chemicals and crossing it with lizard dna in order for it to be fast and economical. then it's only natural for people to reject the idea no matter what country you live in.

also it's not skepticism of science that's making us resistant to developing clean energy. it's government stupidity/corruption which is an issue that will no doubt be settled relatively soon.

even so it's not like the united states hasn't made attempts to use clean energy. in reality we generate more clean energy then countries like france and germany combined but the lack of good infrastructure and inconsistent population density per area makes it less effective.

the only way any worker can fight for a living wage is if no one else is willing or able to take the workers job.

another thing that no illegal immigrants ever considers is that they come seeking a better life with no consideration of how two places so relatively close together. that had the same basic start became so different.

the answer being that is what happens when you stay and try to fix your countries problems rather then running away from them.

No, the vast majority of americans don't believe in science. It isn't just a corrupt government problem. Also, i don't see how the issue of government stupidity/corruption will be settled any time soon. You think Trump is going to fix it or Clinton?

The majority of the house and senate are controlled by people representing the interests of stupid bible thumpers, it isn't just an issue in the bible belt.

I'm not comparing the US to the West. I'm comparing the US to the East. And China is cloning humans.
