I got an old rack server off a guy. What should/could I do with this

So now I've got this Dell PowerEdge R300 server. I'm curious to hear some neat project Ideas I could use it for. Idk if this is the correct category.

It depends on what your skills are. One idea is to use it as backup server. If your into programming you could use it to make mmorpg. Sorry my knowledge is little limited on that area.

Options:

  • Home Plex Media Server (or Kodi, or XBMC)
  • Powerful ddwrt Router
  • Personal Proxy-caching
  • NAS (FreeNAS, Amahi, etc)
    -- ownCloud (personal cloud storage)
    -- backup server through bacula-sd
-- Any of these other options:

Run Proxmox if you don't need specifically a NAS. Then you can screw around with all kinds of virtualized things. That server should be more than powerful enough to run 10-12 containers and 5-6 VMs, depending on how much RAM it has.

Depends what stuff you're into really, if you're into your networks and systems then you could always do a whole lot of virtualisation stuff with it [create a whole lot of virtual machines within it like firewalls. storage servers, media servers, mail exchange etc], otherwise as people have suggested doing a NAS or other storage device. If youre really geeky though you could always use it to try out some password cracking!
