A shotgun mic on top could work, but if I remember correctly, a Blue Yeti or a Razor Siren can work as well, as they have a omni-directional mode which captures the audio in a 360 degree circle.
you may want to think of something like this option 1 or this option 2
edit
so the reason that you may want to look into these guys is that using a shotgun mic far from the speakers will pick up a noticeable amount of room noise because you will need to run the volume higher while what I posted will let you put the mic closer to the speakers while still getting all of their audio and that will mean you can turn down the volume which will hopefully keep the background noise down.
Would i need multiple? Basically what i mean by that is if i place it in the center of the coffee table we have set up would someone at the end of the couch be quiter than the other. Or should i get 2 and place them at both ends
The short answer is that those are boundary mics they will pick up anything not behind it.
In terms of people being quite yes that may happen but it would also happen with a shotgun mic. The boundary mics are meant for what you want.
The other option, depending on the formal you're going to be using, would be to outfit everyone with their own headset and record the audio into their own channels - which has the advantage potentially of you being able to edit/modify one person without having to do the other.
A ModMic Omni would work well for that ($50 each).
You'd have to be careful that you wouldn't be loud enough to generate an echo though, so that plan has its own flaws.
Other than that, a simle Yeti mic would work as well, as it has stereo record mode.
Disclosure: _I work with ModMic :D
