I dont know what i want. Monitors 4k gsync or 1440p 144hz

Hey everyone :)

I have purchased a GTX 1080 and i await its arrival. I am also going to buy a monitor because 1080 60hz is going to be overkill for most the games i play at 1080p. Rocket League Metal Gear Solid V and GTA V. money is tipped out around £480 no pun intended.

I am not competitive. i do love racing games Project Cars and Grid and such.

I'm torn between 1440p 144hz and 4k 60hz GSync. I dont mind turning down setting to get 60FPS in 4k.

Any Advice would be appreciated. If you want to give me your recommendations then that would great ;)

Revine ;D

I recommend going with 1440p.

  • Better selection of monitors (and cheaper)
  • Resolution is noticeably much better than 1080p
    • ( Makes 1080p feel like a phone screen... )
  • Easier to run games
  • No UI scaling needed.

I fear 1440p will not alot look better than 1080p

Trust me... 1440p is surprisingly a big jump up from 1080p

If you are gaming, get the 1440p with 144hz. Not only will you notice the resolution difference, but 144hz will make you never want to return to 60hz.

Ok, Will this be a good fit? it has freesync but its in my budget. Theres something called adaptive-sync? is that just freesync?

hi I have owned 1440p@27" and 4k@27" monitors so here's my 2 cents

first nvidia falls falt on its face at 4k, second 4k is REALLY hard to drive, my 390x CF and Fury X all had troubles playing games even on low settings. That being said 4k on smaller panels produces some super crisp and gorgeous images, I wouldn't trade my 27" 4k for anything, its stellar, and on that note, I found playing at 1440p and upscalling it to 4k looks pretty good, almost as good as native 1440p.

personally I think the 144hz 1440p will give you the better experience, and your GPU is more cut out for it, but if you want say a 32-34" 4k, you won't be disappointed.

With the 1080 I think you should experience all the frames. So I vote for 1440p 144hz.

Word of caution about freesync, some games do not like it, and will give you complete crap performance with it enabled, (Witcher 2, Metro Redux etc)

The GTX 1080 has fast sync. What will that do when vsync is off?

@The_Space_Bear I dont plan to use freesync at all with the GTX 1080 it will be always disabled ;)

Fastsync is basically you run the game with vysnc off, and then the GPU will send out a completed frame on each interval.

so lets say you're running a game at 100fps, the GPU will render all 100 and send out 60 or so.
Vsync the game will run at 60fps no mater what, and the GPU will send out 60 frames to the monitor, this has draw backs and when the game goes below 60fps you get bumped down to 30 fps.

off, game runs at 100fps, and the monitor gets what ever is in the frame buffer, which is someitmes two different frames, which causes tearing.

as for adpative sync, just get g-sync then, you have a 1080, worth the extra premium for it.

I think 4k is more usefull for non-gaming things... (video / photo editing, coding, etc)

Sorry, I dont get it? so with Vsync off and fast sync enabled, The gpu produces 100fps but you will only see 60 on a 144hz monitor?

Waah ?

Fine whatever @The_Space_Bear Leave me confused and looking like a complete tool D:<

1440p wins theres no native 4k supports for alot of things aswell as movies. so 1440p is the best option thanks guys

sorry was out, I used a 60hz monitor for my example.

for 144hz, it would display all 100 frames, then duplicate 44 of them so you would have some repeated frames.

I suggest you watch nvidia explaining it over me

Fastsync is good as it eliminates tearing like VSync but without stalling the render pipeline and therefore adding noticeable latency. Fastsync still adds some latency but it's very low and preferable to tearing. Also able to compliment G-Sync as well if you bought a monitor with that feature.

Just to add I reduced my X34 from 100Hz to 60Hz and played Mad Max for a bit and even with G-Sync enabled there's a noticeable drop in smoothness from 100Hz. I manly noticed the backdrop stuttering a bit more when fast panning. You may not notice it of course unless you did a back to back comparison.

Even my 2560x1080 monitor on my sim setup is perfectly adequate as I sit much further back and don't really notice the drop to 1080.

1080p to 1440p is such a huge jump , 4k is not really that worth it yet however i wish i had gotten a 34" monitor instead of a 27" So i don't know... Just remember you will always want to upgrade.
