I cannot get my wi-fi to work on ubuntu 15.10 [SOLVED]

I am running Ubuntu 15.10 with kernel 4.2.0-19-generic

I have been trying tons of things to try to get the wi-fi to work, but nothing seems to work.

It appears to be hardware locked, but I made sure it is enabled in the bios. There is no button my keyboard to toggle the wifi. When I try enabling it with the button in the gui, a light blinks but nothing happens.

I have been trying to get backported drivers working with no success.

What driver have you installed? Post the output of lspci -nnk | grep Net -A2.

EDIT: I have the same card.

Ok thanks.
So you're using the r8169 driver which is the one bundled with the kernel. But you actually need the r8168, the one I use.
First remove the old driver by doing sudo rmmod r8169 and blacklist it.
Do sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf this should create a file, then we add the line to blacklist the old driver sudo echo "blacklist r8169" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Now we need to install the correct driver, head over the realtek download page and download the "LINUX driver for kernel 3.x and 2.6.x and 2.4.x" version 8.041. You should have a file called 0003-r8168-8.041.00.tar.bz2 inside your download directory (or whatever)
Use the terminal to enter that directory (let's assume it's called downloads and that it's in your home folder):

cd ~/downloads
tar xjvf 0003-r8168-8.041.00.tar.bz2
cd r8168-8.041.00
sudo ./autorun.sh

before doing sudo ./autorun.sh make sure you have the linux-headers package.
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
This should install the new driver. If it all worked reboot and see if it works.

To check if you're using the new driver do lsmod | grep r8168 you should get something like this:

r8168 483328 0

I successfully changed it to r8168, but it did nothing to change the wifi.

facepalm I thought you had issues with the Ethernet controller. LOL.
You are using the correct drivers for your wifi card. So there's no other driver to switch to.

Post the output of lsmod and the outputs of these too:

ls -l /lib/firmware | grep iwl
cat /etc/resolv.conf
ifconfig -a

This maybe not relevant or maybe it is?
I'm using Fedora and had a similar issue, i ended up following a ubuntu forum to fix mine

lspci -vnn

Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi
Kernel modules: iwlwifi

to get it working i had to add file to /etc/modprobe.d/wifiblacklist.conf
[root@localhost modprobe.d]# cat wifiblacklist.conf
blacklist ideapad_laptop

This worked for me.

Let's try this. Unload and reload the driver: sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi ; sudo modprobe iwlwifi then create this new file /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf and do sudo echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1" >> /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf and sudo echo "options iwlwifi swcrypto=1" >> /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
It will disable 802.11n.
Then reboot.

No luck.

Is fn+f2 the wifi switch key? Does it change anything if you press it? If not try rfkill unblock all

It has an airplane icon on it. Nothing really happens when I press it. Though now what happens when I boot up, the airplane icon is lit up when ubuntu starts. It gets all hijinxy when I try to mess with the status of the device, toggling on and off.

The wireless connectivity status remains unchanged, but the bluetooth seems to be responding to it.
