HTPC Software

I'm about to build an HTPC from some parts I have around. The question is... what software to install? OS wise I'm thinking windows, since I still wanna use this machine for casual gaming. What I'm really struggling is with the software, what's the best solution out there? What additional (if any) software should I install?

Thanks for the help/feedback in advance.

xbmc is pretty good

eidt:sorry im dyslexic

Would Steam OS and xbmc be a good combo?

XBMC or Plex

I'm using XBMC on my HTPC. You can't really beat it for community support and tutorials.  I haven't set it up yet, but I've seen videos of people having a Steam header on XBMC that loads up Steam in big picture(full screen) mode, so it's really clean looking.  That's what I'm going to do with mine.

The XBMC and Steam add-on installation instructions on this page look like they would be really helpful:

Thanks for all the tips! I'll look into it.

That sounds like the type of solution I'm looking for, thanks!

KODI( xbmc) anarekist recommended works great as a frontend. it integrates well with steam big picture.

I tried Emudeck+ Emulation station. it was really cool too.

I use Windows, and then Steam Big Picture for gaming and Plex HTPC for watching TV/content.
