HTC One (M7)

Looks like HTC had their new flagship phone announcement today. Kinda bummed that it's actually called the HTC One instead of the M7 seeing as there are a million and one other HTC handsets already in the "One" series (One X, One X+, One V, One S). At least the design is nice and Sense has gotten an "overhaul". The thing that really caught my eye about this phone, though, was the 1080p display on a 4.7" screen. For all you ppi sluts out there, that is a massive 468 pixels per inch, which happens to be the highest we've seen on a smartphone to date. All in all, the phone looks great to me, even if it IS still running Sense. Can't win 'em all I guess. Which brings me to my next point: I will never own this phone because Verizon won't be carrying it. Fuck.

What do you guys think?

Spec sheet does look impressive. New Snapdragon 600 CPU, also gonna be used in the upcoming Optimus G Pro. Sense 5 looks fresh, but pretty irrelevant to me since I like customizing the hell outta my phone. What I'm really interested in seeing is how well that camera performs. It's basically just a 4Mp shooter, but HTC made megapixels "bigger". I'm not a camera geek, I don't really know what any of the camera specs really mean. But this guy on Android Central's forums explained it in layman's terms: http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-one/254078-so-much-misinformation-about-ultrapixels.html

What I got from that is the camera should be amazing.

Also interested in seeing how well that new Shapdragon CPU performs against others. Seeing as how Qualcomm's S4 line pretty much dominated all others. Or did Exynos quad-core beat it...?

I'm pretty sure (meaning probably wrong) that the S4 Pro was the reigning champ, and from my knowledge the S4 Pro and the 600 are VERY similar chips. To be honest, I don't really care about Sense on this phone either. If I had the chance to actually buy it, I'd just throw CyanogenMod on it like any self-respecting Android owner should. As for the camera, if you care THAT much about the specs of a built in camera that has a sensor the size of a fucking ant... just buy a DSLR. I'm glad HTC isn't getting caught up in trying to match Apple's iPhone camera and is instead using that money to shove a 1080p display on a 4.7" screen. That's what people really want. High density displays without having the displeasure of lugging around a 5" brick.

But is that really necessary? 1080p on a 4.7 inch display? I've played around with the Droid DNA and it looks the same as the 720p on the One X. To me it just seems like a dick-measuring contest, but instead of actual inches, mobile companies are throwing around higher-res screens. It's not like I'm complaining, it's just that I feel that mobile manufacturers should be focusing on other areas. Battery life is a good example. Was there any major mobile battery invovation in the last 3, 4 or 5 years? Nowadays it seems every manufacturer's answer to longer battery life is "stick a bigger battery it there".

I simply disagree. The 1080p mobile display looks fantastic. This is the example I point to a lot: look at Facebook or Twitter icons compared to lower res phones. With such a high pixel density, you can clearly make out all the little details and nuances of smaller pictures. It's almost as if they're tiny little people in a tiny little window. However, I can definitely see you point. I'm actually using a phone with a 480x800 display and an iPad mini with a 768x1024 display, and I'm prefectly content with what I have. To the average consumer, though, I think that primal urge to have the best whatever you're buying plays a part during the purchasing process.

With that being said, HTC has to knock one out of the park with their marketing campaign in the coming months. They need to show people that this is the arguably the best phone money can buy, otherwise Samsung is just going to stay on top. It's hard to sell a phone if no one knows it exists.

There's a rumor that a phone similar like this will be heading to Verizon. It might be the Droid One or the Droid DNA 2. Either way, you're gonna get the same specs.

The same specs would be nice, but I feel like Verizon customers are going to get jipped in some way. Probably the design language. Design is the only reason people want the One. Otherwise everyone would just buy an S4, which is on damn near every carrier.
