HP Pavilion, Ubuntu 16.04.3, amdgpu driver

I couldn’t get the opensource driver to work so I tried amdgpu-pro. That gave me the same problem where the screen goes blank and I can’t get it back without a reboot. After a reboot, I have the desktop for awhile and then the same thing happens again - blank screen with no recovery except with reboot. Screensaver is turned off. Suspend is disabled also. I’ve tried various kernel boot parameters but can’t get rid of this problem. I’ve tried both padoka, oibaf, and xorg-edgers repositories. None fix the problem. This laptop is a dual boot machine and I’ve confirmed that Windows 10 doesn’t have this issue. I’ve tried Mint 18.2 also with the same results. I currently have Ubuntu mainline kernel 4.12.12-041212-generic installed. https://paste.ubuntu.com/25486970/

It seems that I found a solution. I stumbled into it. Someone must have known about this but no one responded to any of my queries in any forum. Disappointing having to waste so much time resolving the issue. https://github.com/M-Bab/linux-kernel-amdgpu-binaries. Hopefully that can be put in a FAQ so that it helps someone else.

Usually, if no one replies its because they have no idea how to help you.

“Black screen” issues could literally be anything.
