HP laptop won't charge old battery

So I’ve tried every method(short of BIOS update/refresh) on this HP 15-NO34CA laptop of my friend’s, and I’m just wondering before buying a replacement battery, if there is anyway to keep charging the old battery(almost 3 years old) and try to get a little more life out of it, or if HP designed it to where it’s almost impossible to charge the battery after it hits a certain age/charge.

The first warning message I got was on boot and gave me about the internal battery and 601, and checking with HPSA I get a “replace(42)” status, so I know it should be replaced but I’m wondering if there’s a way to avoid it for a little while.

Thanks.

The cells are dead... You can replace the cells or buy a new battery

Alright, figured as much, just wanted to double check before spending a friends cash. Thanks.

depending on how old the battery is an dthe model of laptop it is, buyin the cells can fix the issue if buying a new battery becomes hard to find.
