How to tell if a switch is dying?

Hello all,

I am wondering if there is a way to test a switch.

My story:

I have a Dell Power Connect 2716 and on occasion I have issues transferring files to and from my server. TeraCopy claims a CRC mismatch, but the files seem to be ok. I have TeraCopy auto verify file transfers every time. I don't have any issues (that I can tell) in accessing them after moving. I usually have these errors when moving several GB worth of files. The transfer never stops, I just get the errors. Once TeraCopy stopped testing and hung after the transfers but before the testing was complete. That time I had moved close to 100 GB of data. I am using Cat6 cables of less than 12 feet each run, with an onboard Intel NIC in my PC (Windows 7 Pro) and a dual Gigabit Intel NIC in my server (WHS 2011).

So I don't know if I have a NIC issue, software issue (TeraCopy) or switch issue.

Should I just start replacing hardware? Or is there another way?

Thanks!

If you are getting CRC errors you could possibly be having issues with the switch or cabling. Since you are using Cat 6 and that means relatively new cable then its hard to fault that. I would change the ports in the switch and see if that resolves the issue first before attempting to replace though, it could be a faulty port.

I've never used TeraCopy so I couldn't be of any assistance in determining if that would be causing the issue or not.

I never thought about bad ports. Thanks! I will try that first.
